Even though the Scarlett Johansson starrer Black Widow was just released, Natasha Romanoff died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Her death became a controversial subject for many diehard Marvel fans who thought it was unfair and didn’t make any sense. And now, Scarlett Johansson has revealed how she took the news of her character’s death in the superhero blockbuster film.
In an appearance on LADbible, Scarlett Johansson said she got the news in a telephone call from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. And although she “took it like a champ” during the call, she was pretty upset about it later.
“I was home on the phone with Kevin Feige, and I don’t know how I reacted. I think I was like, ‘Ok…’ I think all of us sort of… we kind of all would joke with one another about who was going to get offed in Endgame,” she told the celebrity news site. “I was heartbroken about it, but I think I took it like a champ. I cried in the shower later, but nobody saw that part,” she added.
Scarlett Johansson’s tenure as Natasha Romanoff has made her one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. Having played Black Widow for over 10 years, she’s amassed an impressive net worth and cemented herself as top-tier talent in the movie industry.
In a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight, Scarlett Johansson talked about fan reactions to Natasha’s death. She acknowledged the volume of responses it’s gotten but said she understands why Natasha had to die. The actress admitted to having a lot of mixed emotions about her ultimate fate in Avengers: Endgame. But said it made “so much sense” that Natasha Romanoff would sacrifice herself, not just for the greater good of humanity, but for her friends – which was really at the heart of it all.
Scarlett Johansson also mentioned that she had some reservations about doing a Black Widow movie after Endgame. The actress wasn’t sure if the film would be creatively challenging following everything else she’d done in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Luckily, the film has done pretty well with fans and critics. It has also given the actress a sense of closure.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow is the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sees Scarlett Johansson return as Natasha Romanoff for the last time. Eric Pearson wrote the screenplay from a story by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson.
Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Romanoff is forced to confront a conspiracy with dangerous ties to her past as a KGB-trained spy and assassin. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, she must come to terms with her spy history and the broken relationships she left behind long before she joined the Avengers.
Starring alongside Scarlett Johansson is David Harbour as Alexei (aka The Red Guardian), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina. Joining them in the cast are O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, and Ray Winstone as Dreykov.
As of July 18th, the Scarlett Johansson starrer has earned $264 million at the global box office. The movie’s opening weekend ticket takings also exceeded various pre-release projections, with pre-sales surpassing other major Marvel films such as Doctor Strange and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Black Widow is currently available on Disney+ and in theaters worldwide.
