This article is more than 2 years old
First, John Boyega (Star Wars) had a lightsaber, and now he has a katana. Starring in a comedy-drama about the legal system, Naked Singularity will deliver a bit of everything with its action sequences, humorous levity, and compelling drama. With the first trailer out now, you can get a taste of what’s to come.
Casi, played by John Boyega, is a depressed public defender. Losing case after case, a new opportunity arises. A former client, Lea, played by Sound of Metal‘s Olivia Cooke, gets him an offer to recover heroin from an impounded car, which is worth $50 million. The heist turns into a race as other organizations within New York are trying to snag the grand prize.
The film will explore how far corruption and crime go in the city. John Boyega will go from a lawyer who wants to do good, only to realize that the only way to do something constructive is to tear it all down. That may or may not include tear gas and a katana. Check out the first look at Boyega and his weapon of choice in Naked Singularity:
The trailer gives a sense of what to expect in this bonkers crime-ridden film. It shows what to expect from its leading characters and what the chemistry will be like between John Boyega and Olivia Cooke as well as other co-stars. We also get a feel for its tone and style, which, if done right, can be something different from movies that have had similar premises.
John Boyega and Olivia Cooke are not the only big stars to get the spotlight. The trailer also highlights Bill Skarsgard (It), Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool). Some of the smaller roles will include Linda Lavin (Santa Clarita Diet), Kyle Mooney (Arrested Development), and Liza Colón-Zayas (Titans).
The impressive cast with John Boyega and his co-stars is only the icing on the cake; we have to cut it to see the layers with the talent behind the camera. Marking his directorial debut after years of writing, Chase Palmer who co-wrote 2017’s It, will be steering the wheel while also co-writing Naked Singularity. David Matthews (Law & Order: Special Victim’s Unit) will help pen the script based on the book of the same name as the movie by Sergio De La Pava. The two biggest producers are an interesting touch with the procedural crime drama king Dick Wolf, who has made his name off shows like Law & Order. Along with him is Ridley Scott, who is known for many reasons, from Alien to Gladiator. The other executive producers will include Sebastien Raybaud, Francois Callens, John Zois, Mark Roberts, Tony Pachella, Deborah Roth, Anna Boden, and Ryan Fleck.
This will be John Boyega’s first major release since Star Wars Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. He has made small TV appearances on Small Axe and Tomorrow’s Monsters. He is gearing up for plenty of work in the future to bounce off of this comedy-crime drama. He will be in They Cloned Tyrone with Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), the drama 892, Gavin Hood’s (Ender’s Game) next project, The Test, the action-thriller Borderland with Jodie Turner Smith (Queen & Slim) and Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), and Attack the Block 2.
Naked Singularity with John Boyega, Olivia Cooke, and Bill Skarsgard as the leading roles will hit theaters on August 6th and on-demand on August 13th.
