FX on Hulu has finally debuted the much-anticipated teaser trailer of Y: The Last Man. The adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra has been delayed for more than a decade. While no footage from the series (currently being filmed) is shared in the teaser, it does drive forth the core storyline of the upcoming show.
Y: The Last Man series is set in a post-apocalyptic world that is still reeling from the disastrous event where every mammal with a Y chromosome (every human male) was decimated. It’s something that the teaser highlights with some rather grim statistics. But for some reason, a cisgender man and his pet monkey survive the apocalypse that seemingly brought an end to the male race, leaving only females in its wake. The series will see the survivors try and restore the world while adapting to the new normal to ensure that there is a silver lining despite it all.
This is the first time that an adaptation of the Y: The Last Man comics series will be seeing the light of day as initially, plans were to adapt the story into a film. In 2007, the film rights to the series were acquired by New Line Cinema, with Carl Ellsworth on board as screenwriter along with director D. J. Caruso and David S. Goyer as a producer. The filming was supposed to begin in 2008 but a mutual decision on how to adapt the comics series couldn’t be reached. While Caruso believed that the source material was too much to be crammed into one film and wanted to work on a trilogy, New Line was adamant about making a stand-alone film. Caruso ultimately ended up parting ways with the project.
By 2012, Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia joined the film adaptation of Y: The Last Man as its writers and submitted a draft screenplay after which Dan Trachtenberg was tapped to direct the film. There were even plans of beginning production by 2014 but as filming never took off, the rights of Y: The Last Man reverted to its creators.
But despite all the delays, at last, a television adaptation of Y: The Last Man is finally on its way. The series is currently being filmed and is scheduled to wrap up by July 23, 2021, well in time for its premiere on September 13, 2021. The entire first season of the series is going to be directed by women. Eliza Clark is also attached as showrunner as well as executive producer.
Even many of the Y: The Last Man production departments are headed by female heads- both directors of photography, casting director, editors, the production designer, costume designer, stunt coordinator, etc. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force are also on board as executive producers along with Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Louise Friedberg, Brian K. Vaughan, and Melina Matsoukas, while Nellie Reed is the producer.
