Ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 a new Indiana Jones movie has always been on the cards. The new movie will see Harrison Ford reprising his role as Dr. Jones. And now, Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas is joining the cast.
According to an exclusive report by Deadline, Antonio Banderas has been cast in an undisclosed role and will appear alongside franchise newcomers Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Thomas Kretschmann.
Indiana Jones 5 is being directed by Oscar nominee James Mangold (of Logan fame) from a new script he is co-writing with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, who collaborated on Ford v Ferrari. Mangold took over directing duties last year after Steven Spielberg exited the role. Despite his departure, he will remain part of the film’s production team.
The Antonio Banderas starrer, which began shooting at Pinewood Studios near London in June, is the first Indiana Jones movie to be produced under the Disney banner. Indiana Jones 5 will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, original franchise director Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel. John Williams is returning to score the film, continuing a musical journey that began 40 years ago with Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Plot details for the latest installment of Indiana Jones are being kept firmly under wraps. So fans will have to wait and see what new adventure Indy will be facing alongside Antonio Banderas. The film is currently scheduled for release in theaters on July 29, 2022.
Antonio Banderas is best known for portraying the masked vigilante in The Mask of Zorro, earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for 2019’s Pain and Glory. He recently played the antagonist in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard alongside Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek. The actor will also headline other upcoming franchise films such as DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Sony’s Uncharted.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Indiana Jones was developed by the masters of cinema, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in an attempt to create a version of James Bond without the hardware. The collaboration resulted in a franchise that kicked off in 1981 with Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The movie was wildly successful, shattering all sorts of box office records. Praised by fans and critics alike Raiders of the Lost Ark. also cleaned up during awards season, winning an impressive five Academy Awards (and being nominated for Best Picture).
Today, the movie is still considered a quintessential cinema classic. It’s even earned a place in the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Film Registry as a culturally and aesthetically significant piece of cinema history.
The franchise went on to cement its place as a cinematic history with two brilliant follow-ups. This included 1984’s prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull followed in 2008, but it wasn’t as well-received as its predecessors.
