Marvel Star Regrets Series Cancellation And Not Getting Closure
A Marvel star has said he regrets not getting closure on a popular series. The show was cancelled before they finished the story.

With the Netflix group of Marvel characters finally working their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s quite a bit of excitement for what’s to come with some of these guys and gals. It looks like some will get reset and worked into both new and existing storylines within the universe. But not everyone has good vibes about the move and not everyone is making the shift over to the new universe. One of those guys is Mike Colter who, in an interview with Collider, discussed some of the regrets he has about not being able to bring closure to his Netflix series.
In the interview, Mike Colter discussed some new projects but also reflected some on his time as Luke Cage in the Marvel Netflix universe. He lamented that the character’s story was never really wrapped up in the context of the Netflix group and how his and Jessica Jones’s storylines didn’t properly get the right ending. He had a number of interesting things to say about his disappointment here and what it meant to have the series shut down before a planned finish. Here’s part of what Colter had to say:
…It didn’t give me a chance to have any closure. There were so many places we could have taken it…There are a lot of shows that live in that space where it’s like, “Oh, man!” It’s unfortunate, but that’s just one of the things that happens in television sometimes.
Mike Colter went on to talk about a few of the other storylines that could have lived in this Marvel timeline for Luke Cage including the idea that he and Jessica Jones ended up together or that Cage ended up turning on the wrong side of the law in later series. This looked like where things were going at the end of Season 2 when he deputized himself as the Sheriff of Harlem. It’s clear there were future plans for the show, but they never got a chance to wrap it up because Netflix chose to shutter this particular group of characters and their shows.
Luke Cage was part of the group of Marvel Defenders on Netflix that included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. The Punisher worked his way into the mix here as well with overlapping stories that took place in New York City. Though they referenced the larger Marvel franchise and universe, they weren’t technically a part of those stories. It made for an insular group of stories and characters, a bit disjointed from the rest of the Marvel world.
But with Netflix stopping production on those programs a few years ago, the rights of the characters have reverted back to Marvel who is now in the mode of putting them into the great Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though we are still in the rumor phase here, it looks like Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/ Daredevil will be entering the mix and John Bernthal’s The Punisher will as well. Even Vincent D’Onofrio has been mentioned as coming back to the Kingpin role. Those aren’t confirmed but there has been more than enough smoke to assume a fire there.
It’s unclear how or if the rest of the group would fit in. There had been some rumors that Marvel wanted to bring over Kristyn Ritter’s Jones and Colter’s Cage, but it doesn’t look like there’s been any movement on that front. And Colter didn’t discuss any Marvel possibilities in his interview. Time will tell how Marvel chooses to handle this group, with some of the characters critical to the arcs of others in the universe. Maybe Colter could eventually get some closure in this respect.
