Fan artists do the wildest of things, especially for upcoming movies. Artist Jaxson Derr on Instagram posted an image of Paul Dano wearing the classic Riddler outfit that fans would know from DC comics and other adaptions of the iconic villain.
The image, seen below, shows Paul Dano with the iconic hat, cane, and suit combination. With a green filter, it harkens back to a look that is more recognizable for fans of the source material or who have seen the various shows, movies, and games where the villain has appeared.
It is not quite what he will look like in the upcoming movie, The Batman. With a sinister twist, we have gotten brief glimpses of Paul Dano as the serial killer take on the Riddler. Rather than a cane with a nicely tailored green suit, the 2022 movie will have him donning a heavy coat, gloves, and a mask, giving him a darker aesthetic.
Derr has not only portrayed Paul Dano with his artwork. Most recently, the social media artist has made concept art of the new Spider-Man suit in the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which recently got a leak on what we can expect from the official costume. He even made a mockup of Dave Bautista as Bane, a role that the Guardians of the Galaxy actor has been hankering to do.
In 2019, Paul Dano was announced to star in The Batman. His version’s name is Edward Nashton, who in the comics goes off to be Edward Nygma before adopting the name Riddler. While this murderous twist may seem different, the trailer that was shown last year revealed he is not straying away from delivering cryptic messages to his nemesis, the Dark Knight.
Outside of the trailer, we have gotten another strange look at Paul Dano in the movie. Mountain Dew had a bottle that featured his villain, giving a more detailed look at the character. It was on par with the look seen in the trailer with a slightly different perspective.
Matt Reeves’ goal with Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader and Paul Dano as the green-suited villain is to establish a more grounded take that will focus on Batman’s detective work. After all, the character is known as the world’s greatest detective. Other films like Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy plays with that investigative side, but not to the extent that screams “world’s greatest.” While it will have plenty of action, as we have seen from the footage from the trailer, it will feel more like a murder mystery as the iconic hero chases down a serial killer.
Paul Dano and his co-star will have plenty of other big names tagging alongside them. Zoë Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road) will star as Catwoman, Colin Farrel (In Bruges) as Penguin, and John Turturro (The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone. Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego will have plenty of allies. Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings) will play as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jeffery Wright (Westworld) will be James Gordon. Catch Paul Dano as the murderous Riddler in The Batman in theaters on March 4, 2022.
