Vin Diesel Has Another Fan-Favorite Sequel Ready to Shoot

At the moment, the ninth film in the Fast & Furious saga is busy breaking the pandemic box office records and has already grossed over $412 million worldwide thus becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2021. And while fans are waiting for plans for the final films in the series to fully materialize, Vin Diesel has shared updates on another successful franchise of his career- the status of the fourth film in the Riddick film series, which has been awaited by fans for years now.
Vin Diesel has played the role of former mercenary and anti-hero, Riddick, for the first time in 2000’s science fiction horror film, Pitch Black. He later reprised the role in The Chronicles of Riddick and later in Riddick. It has been quite some time since Diesel disclosed new information about the fourth film, titled Riddick 4: Furya, in the series. But recently, during a chat with GamesRadar+ about Fast & Furious 9, he was asked about any recent updates on the film and he revealed that chances are that he will soon begin filming it.
Vin Diesel shared that the script for the film has already been written by writer David Twohy who will also be directing the film. While he didn’t share an exact date when the filming will take off, he established that it will be shot in Australia. As for a follow-up to the games in the franchise- The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (2004) and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (2009)- the plans are less concrete but a new chapter in the games is definitely a possibility.
Plans for a fourth film in the franchise have been in the pipeline since 2014 when Vin Diesel had announced that the success of 2013’s Riddick has encouraged Universal Pictures to pursue a sequel. By April 2016, he had re-confirmed the plans for a fourth film in the series and shared he and writer-director David Twohy are not only developing the film titled Furia at the time but also a spin-off TV series titled Merc City. He has also hinted that the film will explore the origin story of Riddick, something that the hit game, Escape from Butcher Bay, is based on. While Diesel’s prior promises of production of the film beginning never transpired, now that the script is completed hopes of the franchise’s fans have been renewed.
Meanwhile, while details on the finals film in the Fast & Furious saga are equally scarce, Vin Diesel has confirmed that he will be busy bringing his journey as Dominic Toretto full circle next year as he will begin shooting Fast & Furious 10 Part 1 and 2 in January. He will also be seen in the sequels of James Cameron’s Avatar (2009), Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 in 2022 and 2024 in a yet undisclosed role. Fast & Furious 9, directed by Justin Lin, is currently in theaters and stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron.
