20th Century Games and Cold Iron Studios finally unveiled a new trailer and release date for their upcoming installment in the Alien franchise, after nearly six years in development. The new Aliens game, now known as Aliens: Fireteam Elite, will release in August of this year for several gaming platforms, bringing the action elements back into the Alien gaming franchise.
The recently revealed Aliens: Fireteam Elite pre-order trailer showcases some of the game’s unearthly environments, new Xenomorphs threats, and Wayland-Yutani synthetic forces for the player’s team to overcome on their way to the hive. As per the trailer, this three-player co-op shooter is set to release on August 24 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, putting players and their friends in the roles of Colonial Marines.
And while Aliens: Fireteam Elite is very much an Aliens gaming experience, it vastly differs from the rest of the most recent entries in the franchise, which took a turn towards the survival-horror genre with 2014’s Alien: Isolation. And though the game saw massive success, it almost entirely dropped the action aspect of the narrative in favor of survival horror elements. Aliens: Fireteam Elite is throwing a counter-punch, meaning that the game is downplaying the series’ horror elements in favor of team-based action.
Like with other similar titles, similar to the Left 4 Dead series, the players will embark on various missions, relying on teamwork and communication to successfully overcome all the challenges and enemies the game throws at them. In total, the new Aliens game offers 20 different Xenomorph and Wayland-Yutani synthetics which are most likely outside their service warranty. Each type of enemy will feature its own AI system for the gaming team’s entertainment. The three-person co-op shooter means that the game mainly relies on multiplayer or AI bots if the group is a player short.
As for the narrative, Aliens: Fireteam Elite offers four story-driven campaigns set in the Alien universe 23 years after the events of the original trilogy. And while the specific details regarding the plot remain obscure, the game offers varying levels of character customization depending on the edition. The standard edition provides the campaign and customizable Colonial Marines for approx. $40, with the Deluxe Edition offering class kit skins, weapon colors, head accessories, and different cosmetic items for a slightly higher cost. Additionally, players who pre-order Aliens: Fireteam Elite will get the Hardened Marine Pack, including other cosmetics, a Chestburster emote, and a bandana that completes the Private Vasques look.
Alien is one of the world’s most profitable media franchises, spawning six movies, over a dozen short films, 22 video games (including the upcoming Aliens: Fireteam Elite), and an animated series currently being discussed at Netflix.
