Despite being 78 years old, Harrison Ford continues to do action movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the next iteration of Indiana Jones. While filming the fifth installment in the long-running franchise, the actor injured his shoulder while rehearsing a fight scene, as reported by Deadline. A Disney spokesperson confirmed the news and said he would be taking a break from filming as he rests.
While evaluating his condition and waiting to see how he heals, the production will start back up once Harrison Ford gives the thumbs up when his shoulder is okay enough to go back to beating on Nazis. There is currently no known time frame of when this will happen.
Filming started earlier this month in the U.K. with director James Mangold (Logan), not Steven Spielberg who is still attached as a producer with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel. Harrison Ford will be joined by Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Boyd Holbrook (Narcos), Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther), and Thomas Kretschmann (Avengers: Age of Ultron). The score will be composed by returning composer John Williams, who has worked on every entry of the action-adventure franchise.
This is not the first injury Harrison Ford has had in recent years while filming. Returning to his equally iconic role of Han Solo in the seventh episode of Star Wars with The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams, as he broke his leg from a door on the Millennium Falcon.
The plot is currently unknown, but rumors are circulating about it centering on the space race as it is set after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which took place in the late 1950s. A 1960s setting would fit, but the cosmic setting is up in the atmosphere. But we can expect Harrison Ford to fight some Nazis at the very least.
Indiana Jones debuted in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Harrison Ford continued with sequels that were released throughout the 80s with 84’s Temple of Doom and 89’s Last Crusade. Except, it was not the last crusade as he returned with Shia LaBeouf in 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was heavily panned by audiences and critics. With Mangold’s critically acclaimed Logan, which marked Hugh Jackman’s last outing as the clawed superhero, this could be the redemption needed for the franchise.
Disney is expanding upon the IP. As the company is giving the video game industry another shot, with its last venture with Disney Interactive Studios shutting down in 2016, Indiana Jones will hit the virtual world. In January of this year, Machine Games, the studio behind the rebooted Wolfenstein series that launched in 2014, will take the reins to make a video game version of the films. It is unknown if Harrison Ford will be attached or if it will be canon with the big-screen universe.
Despite the early setback of the shoulder injury, fans should expect to see Harrison Ford on the big screen for the untitled Indiana Jones sequel on July 29, 2022.
