Netflix Has Cancelled Another Series After A Single Season

Deadline has reported that Jamie Foxx’s Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! series on Netflix has been canceled after one season.
Produced by the Oscar-winning actor with his daughter, Corinne Foxx, the show was inspired by their relationship. The now-canceled Netflix original follows Brian Dixxon, a single father played by Foxx, who has his world needing adjustment as his teenage daughter Sasha (Kyla-Drew) moves in with him.
Debuting with eight episodes back in April, the decision behind its demise is reportedly from co-creator Jamie Foxx, who partnered to make the series with Two and a Half Men producer Jim Patterson. Ahead of its production, Patterson dropped from the project. In his replacement came Bentley Kyle Evans (The Jammie Foxx Show, Family Time). Evans would go to direct two of the eight episodes while Ken Whittingham (The Office, Parks, and Recreation) directed the rest of the lone season before it had its ties cut from Netflix by being canceled.
This is one of many shows under the streaming service that have been axed as Netflix has had plenty of hits that would eventually get canceled after a single season. One of the biggest stories of this was The Get Down, which was a 2016 musical drama that had its first half released in August, and then the rest came out next April. The show was a hit, but due to production issues that skyrocketed the budget, it could not be found to justify itself with another go.
Less popular series that have been hit by a lack of an audience and poor reception from critics have been led down to the same fate. Gypsy was on its way for a second outing; then it was canceled by Netflix. Girlboss had its fate sealed shortly after release due to poor reception from critics.
Another notable case was The Defenders, a Marvel superhero team-up that was built up through individual shows with Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. Eventually, each of those shows, including The Punisher, would get offed one by one. Now Marvel has gained the rights back to these characters, but nobody knows what the studio will do with its small screen heroes.
Back in 2017, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that more shows should be canceled. To push the creative team, he believes the company should be taking more risks because there needs to be “a higher cancel rate overall.”
Despite Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! getting canceled, Foxx still has projects coming onto Netflix. They Cloned Tyrone, a sci-fi series about a “nefarious government conspiracy,” will star the Django actor with Teyonah Parris (WandaVision) and John Boyega (Star Wars). The show will be directed and penned by Creed II writer Juel Taylor, with Tony Rettenmair (Space Jam: A New Legacy). Foxx will also star in Day Shift, a vampire hunting comedy, with Dave Franco (Neighbors) and Meagan Good (Shazam!). The movie will be a directorial debut for J.J. Perry, who is known for stunt work in films like John Wick. He will team up with writers Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead) and Tyler Tice, with this being a debut project for Tice.
