Two years have passed since the highly divisive series finale of HBO’s massively successful Game of Thrones, and the fans are still discussing the final moments of the series – mainly focusing on the death of Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen at the hands of her blood nephew/lover, Jon Snow. Shocking, in more ways than one. Clarke is now press-promoting her comic book M.O.M. Mother of Madness, and she’s readily discussing the hated ending to the series.
Emilia Clarke, best known for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, stated that it would be utterly impossible for the show’s ending to please everyone, as reported by WinterIsComing.net. The statement comes from her appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, in which she adds that she understands why some fans felt angry about the series’ ending. She also added that she’s just an actor who was given a story to tell.
Emilia Clarke admits to having had some autonomy over the role and what flavor the story might’ve had. Still, the looks and final garish of the finale were for editors to decide, just like it was up to writers to determine the narrative of her character. However, she felt a “gut punch” when she first read the scripts, despite her professional approach to the role – quite reasonable, given how she poured a decade of hard work into the part. Though she wondered how the series’ fandom would react to her character’s demise, Emilia Clarke decided not to get involved in any commotion regarding the series’ ending by not reading what people were saying. Another instance of her commendable professionalism.
Aside from what the people were saying to her personally, Emilia Clarke was largely unaware of the fandom reaction regarding the finale until the shocking discovery of her character’s demise became common knowledge and “old news” among the fandom. To be honest, Clarke had this approach to the series from the very beginning, when she appeared in the series premiere episode in 2011, as Daenerys Targaryen – a role that garnered her international recognition and several accolades, including four Emmy Awards nominations.
Emilia Clarke’s breakthrough as Daenerys brought her other roles, including the role of Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, Qi’ra in the Solo: A Star Wars Story, and several other cinematic releases over the years. However, she’ll probably remain best known as the mother of dragons from the Game of Thrones television show, whose last season received the worst ratings in the show’s history. Though the season premiere was met with favorable feedback, the last two episodes in the franchise “The Bells” and “The Iron Throne” were the worst-reviewed episodes in the history of the series.
The fans expected Jon Snow to bend the knee, as he did in the previous season and Daenerys’ to rise on the throne. Instead, the series pitted two of the most beloved characters against each other, Jon Snow against the Mother of Dragons. With Daenerys’ demise at the hands of Jon Snow and Bran the Broken as the new king, the fans are left with a bitter aftertaste and Emilia Clarke understands why. Hopefully, the upcoming House of the Dragon won’t suffer the same fate.
