The Ultimate DC Super Villain Getting His Own Series
The most powerful Dc super villain could be getting a show.
After the resounding success of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, DC fans have been calling for the SnyderVerse to be restored. Although the director is supportive of the cause, in an interview with Justice Con he told fans to “manage their expectations” because he wasn’t sure if “anything will come of it anytime soon”.
Luckily, it seems like there may be some hope thanks to a new HBO Max series. According to a report by Geekosity, the streaming site is thinking about developing a series that ties into the SnyderVerse. The limited live-action series will apparently focus on DC’s ultimate supervillain Darkseid.
While nothing is officially confirmed, Warner Bros.‘ decision to create a show that focuses on a bad guy is due to the success of Loki, Marvel’s latest offering on Disney+. The publication also states that if the series does get the green light, it will have no connection to the now-canceled DC film New Gods from Ava DuVernay.
If the DC series is the first step toward restoring the SnyderVerse, the story would see Darkseid continue on his quest to find the Anti-Life Equation. However, the site claims that the studio just wants to focus on a simple origin story and Zack Snyder will not be asked to resume directing duties.
Created by Jack Kirby, Darkseid made his comic book debut in 1970’s Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 in somewhat of a cameo role. He was properly introduced to DC readers a year later (1971) in the first issue of Forever People. Darkseid is the tyrannical ruler of the planet Apokolips whose ultimate goal is to enslave the universe by eliminating all hope and free will in sentient beings.
A New God and one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, he was initially conceived as the main antagonist in Kirby’s Fourth World saga before becoming one of Superman’s greatest villains and the Justice League’s archenemy. Since then, the character has been ranked as the 6th Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time by IGN and the 23rd Greatest Villain of All Time by Wizard magazine.
Over the years Darkseid has been adapted from DC comics into various forms of media and made his feature film debut in Zack Snyder’s Justice League where he was portrayed by Ray Porter. The last time we saw this version of Darkseid, he had just witnessed the death of Steppenwolf whose decapitated body was tossed back through a portal to Apokolips. But in true villain style, Darkseid reassured his servant DeSaad that despite the setback he will return to Earth to complete his quest since the location of the Anti-Life Equation had been revealed.
Even if nothing comes of the series, Zack Snyder’s work in the DC Extended Universe has laid the groundwork for the franchise that’s still going strong. His legacy lives on in the characters he brought to life (like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and The Flash) that can all be seen in their own movies. It’s also worth noting that getting to see The SnyderCut seemed impossible just a few years ago. So perhaps there’s still hope for The Synyderverse to be restored in the future.
