Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell are teaming up for a new television series on Apple TV+. Right away when you hear those two names, you know the series is going to be funny. Kathyrn Hahn and Casey Wilson are also part of the cast, again signaling that the new series is going to be hilarious. The Shrink Next Door sees Paul Rudd playing Will Ferrell’s therapist. In the new trailer, it starts off hilarious, and while it stays that way, an eery edge jumps in. The tone promises something unique that you have to see for yourself.

There are so many takeaways from this trailer. We might as well start with one of the internet’s favorite topics: just how old is Paul Rudd? How is that guy 52 years old? He barely looks any different from when Clueless came out in 1995. Something isn’t right there. Also, is there some significant meaning to the fact that both Rudd and Will Ferrell are wearing glasses in this series? It definitely adds to the “I hold the power” feeling for Rudd’s therapist character. And it makes Ferrell feel even more like a sympathetic character. Somehow, glasses made each of them both more and less powerful.

But, back to the plot for The Shrink Next Door. Somehow, this trailer manages to show us what we’re expecting from this comedic duo while being wildly sinister. And yet, we didn’t learn what it is that Paul Rudd is doing to ruin Will Ferrell’s life. How is he abusing the trust of his patient? No clues were really given to explain that, and yet the trailer managed to make that promise in a big way. Is there anything more sinister than the idea of trusting a therapist who may be messing with you? The series is noted to be a dark comedy. Dark seems to be a keyword here.

We can’t ignore the moment in the middle where Will Ferrell is swearing to Paull Rudd that of course he trusts him. “I trust you completely.” And then we see Ferrell’s character burying something. The trailer doens’t dig in to what exactly that something is. It’s shown after a funeral scene, which may have something to do with why Ferrell is in therapy and nothing to do with what his therapist gets him into. But the burying of something is shown at the same time Ferrell is swearing trust to his therapist. This show promises to be wild and unexpected, as well as likely very dark and bizarre.

Adding to the sinister edge is the note that this Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd show for Apple TV+ is actually based on a true story. The story was chronicled in a podcast by the same name as the new show. The Shrink Next Door podcast was said to be “a story about power, control and turning to the wrong person for help”. Hopefully, every episode comes with a content warning that suggests most therapists aren’t someone to be afraid of, because just the concept is enough to give someone pause before their next appointment.

The series isn’t scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ until November 12, 2021.
