Gerard Butler (300) and Morena Baccarin (Deadpool) are set to reprise their roles in an upcoming sequel to the 2020 natural disaster movie Greenland, as reported by Variety. Butler played structural engineer John Garrity and Baccarin will return as her role as his wife, Allison Garrity.
The first film followed the Garrity family, which comprised of Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd (Doctor Sleep) as their son Nathan, who survived in a Greenland bunker when a comet devastated the planet. They left their shelter and searched through a European wasteland to find a new place they can call home.
The core crew will tag along with the two leading stars. Director Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen) will be steering the wheel while Chris Sparling (Buried) will once again pen the script. No release date is suggested or plot is known yet for the surviving family. It has some ways away as Waugh is currently working on National Champions starring Timothy Olyphant (Justified) and Kandahar that will also star Gerard Butler. Sparling also had some films in his backlog that he is writing. Currently, he is working on Intrusion with director Adam Salky (Blindspot), Lakewood, with director Phillip Noyce (The Giver) and Incident on 459 with director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI).
The sequel, named Greenland: Migration, will also see financier and producer Anton, Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Pictures will rejoin Gerard Butler and Alan Siegal’s G-Base to produce the next installment of the family’s mission to survive this disaster. Meanwhile, U.S. Principle photography is set to begin in 2022 with CAA Media Finance to co-represent.
The Gerard Butler film was relatively well-received, according to Rotten Tomatoes. 151 critic reviews were submitted, giving it a 77 percent. The audience score was less with more reviews. It had over 1,000 reviews that landed it a 63 percent rating. Right here on Giant Freakin Robot, our review gave it three and a half robots out of five.
With COVID-19, any film released in 2020 has struggled to make a profit at the box office. Many were streamed on services like Netflix or HBO Max. With an approximate budget of $35 million, the Gerard Butler film grossed over $52 million. As it was not released in the U.S., it only accounts for other countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America. It was the number one movie in over 26 countries. The most in Europe was France with $4.6 million, while Germany was behind with $3 million. Mexico was not far behind either with $3.6 million, as the leading country in South and Central America. The rest that followed Mexico were significantly lower with Brazil and Colombia not reaching the million mark. In Asia, South Korea raked in $2.5 million, with Taiwan tailing behind with $18,000 less. China had been on par with the other countries as it earned $3.4 million.
Greenland skipped theaters in North America due to the scale of the pandemic. Instead, it released on streaming to audiences who were missing out on the big screen action for $19.99 to rent for 48 hours. It is currently on Hulu and HBO Max.
