Angelina Jolie’s comeback is in full swing as the actress now has the number one movie on HBO Max in the U.S.
After appearing in only three movies over the past six years, Those Who Wish Me Dead is the first of two movies that Angelina Jolie is leading. In this one, Jolie is Hannah Faber, a smokejumper who is trying to cope with the loss of three young campers and a fellow smokejumper during a large forest fire, deaths she feels she should have prevented.
Owen Casserly is a forensic accountant who learns that his boss, along with his boss’s family, died in a gas explosion at their home. He knows that the explosion was not an accident. Now fearing for his life and the life of his young son Connor, the two take off for Montana to seek help from his Deputy Sheriff brother-in-law Ethan, who also happens to be Hannah’s ex-boyfriend.
As Owen and Connor reach Montana, near Ethan, they are ambushed by the assassins, brothers Jack and Patrick Blackwell, who killed Owen’s boss. Owen gets mortally wounded but before he dies, he gives his son evidence against mob boss Arthur Phillip. Owen escapes but to cover their tracks, the Blackwell brothers start a forest fire.
While out on patrol, Angelina Jolie’s Hannah comes across a scared Connor. Not sure he can trust her, he runs, though Hannah is able to catch him. Seeing all the blood on him, she slowly tries to convince Connor he can trust her. She gets him to go with her to the lookout tower so they can radio for help.
Meanwhile, the two assassins continue their search for Connor. They reach Ethan’s house only to find his pregnant wife Allison. She slyly alerts Ethan something is wrong and when Ethan and the Sheriff arrive, the Blackwells kill the Sheriff, taking Ethan hostage. They want Ethan to help find Connor.
Ethan and the Blackwells arrive at the lookout tower. It appears empty, so they send Ethan up to make sure it isn’t a trap. Hannah and Connor are hiding so Ethan tells them to stay hidden. The Blackwell, looking through binoculars, can see that Ethan is talking to someone, so they begin firing into the tower.
Ethan is wounded as Hannah and Connor escape. The Blackwells split up, one going after Hannah and Connor, the other sticking around to take out Ethan and Allison. The heat is turned up as the forest fire the assassin’s started gets ever so closer.
Those Who Wish Me Dead boasts a nice cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Punisher), Nicholas Hoult, Aiden Gillen, Medina Senghore, and Finn Little as Connor.
Taylor Sheridan directs the film as well as co-writes along with Charles Leavitt and Michael Koryta, based on the best-selling novel of the same name, which was also written by Koryta. If Sheridan’s name is familiar, it should be. He is the mastermind of the hit Kevin Costner series Yellowstone, as well as the writer on such hit movies as Sicario, Hell or High Water, Wind River, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Prior to Sheridan jumping over to the writing and directing side of the ledger, he was an actor seen in shows such as NYPD Blue, Veronica Mars, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Sons of Anarchy. He also was in a few episodes of Yellowstone.
Those Who Wish Me Dead has enjoyed a dual release – movie theater and streaming on HBO Max. While it has only seen a modest take at the box office ($16 million and counting), it has become a number one hit across the HBO Max streaming service here in the United States.
As for Angelina Jolie, her calendar has finally begun to fill after minimal work the past decade. In that time, Jolie has seen time on five films, beginning with the 2014 Disney hit Maleficent, a role she would reprise in the 2019 feature Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Her other two movies during this time were By the Sea and Come Away.
2021 looks to be busy by Angelina Jolie’s standards. On top of appearing in Those Who Wish Me Dead, Jolie is a large part of an ensemble cast for the highly anticipated Marvel’s Eternals which will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. This movie will also co-star the likes of Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Lia McHugh, and Kumail Nanjiani. After that, Jolie will begin production on Every Note Played.
