Netflix is going all in. After taking over for Universal Pictures in October 2019, Netflix has been chomping at the COVID bit trying to find the right time to release their highly anticipated action flick Red Notice. While it’s been said that the film will see a late 2021 release, we are now hearing from sources for We Got This Covered that the Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds movie has already been given the Netflix greenlight for a sequel.
Red Notice is by far Netflix’s most expensive project to date with an estimated $160 million budget. As Dwayne Johnson and writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber were putting the project together, it entered a major bidding war between the big studios, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and Paramount Pictures. Netflix was also involved and actually was the runner-up to Universal.
As Thurber completed the script which also included the film’s budget, he sensed some hesitation from Universal. According to their deal, they had very specific progress to production timelines Universal was to meet and when the date wasn’t met, it left an opening for Thurber to take the script back out. Netflix jumped in again and Scott Stuber, Head of Film for Netflix, committed big time to everything Thurber and Johnson requested.
Why not? Netflix is looking for a franchise and having Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds in one would be a boon for the already “booning” company. As mentioned, though, it comes at a cost. For starters, Thurber’s salary is a cool $10 million to write and direct the movie. Easy peasy.
Then comes the three biggies. When Netflix finally got their hands on Red Notice, they immediately decided they wanted to bring in all three stars equally. So, all three will be pulling in salaries of $20 million. Gal Gadot’s salary made her the third highest-paid actress of 2020. With Dwayne Johnson, he stands to make well more than his initial $20 million as he is also producing the movie under his Seven Bucks Production banner. He stands to add another several million to his final tally.
So, what’s so exciting about Red Notice, other than the three big names? While there is not much to go on, what little we do know about the plot sounds intriguing and fun. Dwayne Johnson plays an INTERPOL agent who is good at what he does, tracking criminals. Gal Gadot plays the world’s greatest art thief while Ryan Reynolds is on hand as the world’s great con man. Perfect casting all the way around. The story follows the three as a daring art heist brings them together.
The movie has been completed for some time. When it was first with Universal, it had a scheduled release date of June 12, 2020. The movie was then pushed back to November, and then Netflix took over. While the movie is now scheduled to premiere in the latter quarter of 2021, Netflix must like what they see as the talk of a sequel has begun.
Inside sources have confirmed that Netflix has already given the green light to a Red Notice 2. Not much more information has been given, seeing as the first movie has yet to premiere. The expectation, though, is that all three stars will be returning to their roles and a new adventure will follow. If the film is as successful as Netflix is hoping, you can also expect Thurber to return to his writing and directing role as well. Red Notice is the third collaboration between Johnson and Thurber, the two having previously filmed Central Intelligence and Skyscraper.
On top of sources confirming a Red Notice sequel, there have also been rumors that Dwayne Johnson is trying to use his immense pull and bring along two other big names to possibly join himself, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds. One name is a star Johnson unsuccessfully tried to grab for his Hobbs and Shaw movie and that is Matrix and John Wick’s Keanu Reeves. Another huge name Johnson is rumored to be going after is Tom Cruise. Johnson, and most definitely fans, would give just about anything to see a film led by Johnson, Gadot, Reynolds, Reeves, and Cruise. Would there be enough screen time to appease everyone?
While there has yet to be a full-on trailer released for Red Notice, you can check out clips of the upcoming movie, as well as many other projects from Netflix, on the teaser below.
