Gina Carano ended up altering the course of the Star Wars franchise on Disney+, but it wasn’t in the way many would have thought for her first two seasons as Cara Dune on The Mandalorian. Basically, she was becoming such a popular character that the studio had started to create independent projects for her, only to later fire her for social media dustups. Well now it looks like they are still working on how to fill some of the content void and We Got This Covered is reporting that another character from the universe could be getting her own series. It looks like the studio is considering spinning off Ming Na-Wen’s Fennec Shand into another project.
Originally, Gina Carano was supposed to star in the new series The Rangers of the New Republic which apparently was going to have her Cara Dune as the lead character. But following the ouster, they scrapped the entire show and are now looking for other places to pivot those stories and resources. Enter the possibility of getting more stories and possibly an entire series with Fennec Shand as the main character. It would be an interesting move considering the latter is definitely trending on the gangster side of things, but this is a world in which stories can change and anti-heroes are something of the norm.
As the studio looks to distance themselves, for now, from Gina Carano and her presence within the Star Wars franchise, they have continued to expand the universe with plenty of new stories. We already know that Ming Na-Wen as Fennec Shand was sticking around, having been cast in the limited series The Book of Boba Fett which is supposed to release later this year. She’d been discovered to have teamed up with the titular bounty hunter in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. It’s been established that the two are firmly in business together and now sit at the head of Jabba the Hutt’s old little empire.
Of course, all of this is coming to pass because of Disney’s decision to remove Gina Carano which happened when they fired her near the beginning of the year. After months of speculation that she was on her way out because of some ill-received social media postings, they finally made the decision after she compared the treatment of modern-day Republicans to that of Jews during the Holocaust. This led to her ouster and subsequent removal from all future projects in the franchise.
There might be a path for Gina Carano to one day return to the Star Wars franchise, but it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. They haven’t officially announced whether her Cara Dune character will officially be killed off or will simply disappear. The galaxy is big enough to have her just not come back. And it was an interesting sign that Disney+ decided to air a recent episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls in which Carano was a guest. She might not be completely persona non grata right now.
Gina Carano has signed a deal to produce and star in movies for the conservative media company The Daily Wire, but there hasn’t been much in the way of news on what those films will look like now.
