It’s been more than a decade since we last caught up with the swashbuckling archeologist, but it looks like we are finally going to wrap up his story, and likely this franchise, in the next couple of years. Now we have some more details on how Indiana Jones 5 is going to shake out and what to expect from this last adventure. It looks like it’s going to be a good one with The Illuminerdi dropping a number of different plot and character reveals. According to the reporting, Indiana Jones is going to be part of the space race with, of course, the Nazis involved as well.
These latest Indiana Jones 5 plot details give some specifics about what to expect from the next film. We already knew that Mads Mikkelsen had been cast to play a villain in the movie, though it wasn’t totally clear about what his character would be up to and how it would come into conflict with Dr. Henry Walton Jones. Well, apparently Mikkelsen will be playing a former Nazi scientist who’s been recruited by NASA to help with space missions, specifically the attempt to land on the moon.
From a timing perspective, this narrative arc makes a lot of sense. The fourth film in the franchise Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took place in 1957 and involved some space themes of its own when we were treated to some UFO conspiracy arcs. That flick came out in 2008. With a little wiggle room around the math, we could easily land Indiana Jones 5 in 1969, just in time for Neil Armstrong to take those small steps and giant leaps on the lunar surface. The pieces all fit together. Now how Indiana gets his brown fedora and whip past security and into the NASA control room will remain to be seen, but in terms of lining up with the story with large-scale world events, this is definitely the way to go.
According to The Illuminerdi exclusive, Mads Mikkelsen won’t be the only character Indy has to worry about in Indiana Jones 5. Shaunette Renee Wilson has also been cast as a CIA handler who’s in charge of watching over Mikkelsen’s character. It’s unclear where her allegiances lie in this story. And there’s also supposedly another female villain in the script who is as cold-blooded as they come and is aligned with Mikkelsen. That role has yet to be cast. Keeping the Nazi villain theme as part of the overall story makes a lot of sense for this franchise and there’s some historical context to the US government recruiting these folks post World War II.
Indiana Jones 5 has been a long time coming and it wasn’t exactly clear if the film would ever be made. For starters, while Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a hit from a box office perspective ($791 million) and a critical one as well (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), the torch passing attempt from Harrison Ford to Shia Labeouf as Mutt Williams didn’t quite pan out. And over the last decade, it’s gone through so many starts and stops with the script, a studio change (LucasFilm to Disney), and even Steven Spielberg stepping down as director. James Mangold will replace him.
But with these new characters and plot points getting out there, it looks like Indiana Jones 5 is a full go, and not a moment too soon Harrison Ford now pushing 80 years old. Filming is set to start shortly and will likely be the last one in the franchise for Ford at least. If so, this could be a great way to go out with his archeologist background colliding with one of the great technological feats of a generation.
