One of Kiefer Sutherland’s most memorable TV characters is returning to the small screen and you can watch it all for free. Yes, 24 and Jack Bauer are back and IMDB TV has it for you.
24 first hit the airwaves in 2001 becoming an immediate hit for Kiefer Sutherland and Fox. The series, created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, revolved around Sutherland’s Jack Bauer, a counter-terrorist agent.
The series was unique in that each season consisted of 24 episodes and those episodes represented one hour out of one harrowing Jack Bauer day. This is how long Jack Bauer would have to stop whatever attack America was under. To emphasize the 24-hour nature of the series, a clock was continuously displayed on the screen throughout each episode.
For instance, season one began at midnight, and Bauer’s objective was to protect the President of the United States (played in the first five seasons by Dennis Haysbert) while at the same time try to rescue his own family from those plotting to kill the president.
Each season follows the same premise. Bauer’s assignment begins at a specific time and the clock starts. What made the series so compelling, besides Sutherland’s portrayal of Bauer, was the fact that each season offered Bauer a new, harrowing challenge. Not only were there new challenges but other personal dilemmas were being dealt with at the same time.
One season Bauer has to first stop a nuclear bomb from detonating in Los Angeles, then aid President Palmer in proving who’s responsible so they can avoid a possible war between the US and three Middle Eastern countries. Another season Bauer has to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel as they are about to unleash a deadly virus while President Palmer deals with a scandal that could cost him his job as president.
24 ran for 8 seasons with each season beginning anywhere from 65 days to three-and-a-half years after the previous season. 24 and Kiefer Sutherland also enjoyed two made-for-TV movies. The first one, 24: Redemption, was conceived to bridge the one-and-a-half years between seasons six and seven due to the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike.
The second TV movie was a 24-event movie, coming four years after the series ended its eighth and final season. This one was called 24: Live Another Day and saw the return of Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer in a 12-episode mini-series. While the return only consisted of 12 episodes, it still followed the same time format, covering the missing 12 hours with well-planned time jumps.
During the series’ eight seasons, it received numerous awards. Along with The West Wing, NYPD Blue, Breaking Bad, and Homeland, 24 was the only other TV series to win the Emmy Award, a Golden Globe, and the Satellite Award for Best Drama Series. As for Kiefer Sutherland, for his portrayal of Jack Bauer, he was nominated seven times for an Emmy Award, winning once in 2006.
Kiefer Sutherland has had a career many actors would kill for. After getting his start on movies such as The Bay Boy, At Close Range, and Amazing Stories, Sutherland began to gain more recognition with the coming-of-age film Stand by Me and then The Lost Boys. Young Guns and its sequel put him on the map and from there Sutherland’s career took off. Flatliners, A Few Good Men, The Three Musketeers, and The Cowboy Way were just a few films that added to his growing resume.
Not only was Kiefer Sutherland known for what made it to the big or small screen, but he also had a couple of notable projects that didn’t quite make it. Sutherland was going to be Robin alongside Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s Batman. Sutherland stated he turned down the role because he couldn’t imagine seeing himself in the bright yellow tights that Burt Ward wore in the ‘60s TV series. It was only later that Sutherland realized that Burton’s vision of Batman was to be much darker than the series. The character of Robin was eventually written out of the script.
On the small screen, Kiefer Sutherland starred in the 2003 unused pilot of L.A. Confidential, based on the James Ellroy novel and the 1997 Academy Award-winning film. In it, Sutherland played Detective Jack Vincennes (a role that Kevin Spacey played in the movie) but for some unknown reason, the series was never picked up.
24 was not the only TV series that Kiefer Sutherland has had success with. He has starred in Touch, a series that lasted two seasons. Another big series for Sutherland was Designated Survivor. This one lasted three seasons. Most recently Sutherland was Detective Clay Bryce in the reboot of the 1963 TV series and 1993 movie, The Fugitive.
