James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad has become one of the year’s most anticipated superhero films. Ever since its wild first trailer hit the internet a few weeks back, fans have been clamoring for any new piece of information they can get their hands on until the movie hits theaters later this year. Now, Gunn has taken to Twitter to share a fan-submitted photo of a pet snake cosplaying as Polka-Dot Man.

The internet needs more of this. Way more of it. A harmless, fun, hype-fueling cosplaying snake meant to brighten days and distract from the world’s many woes. Fortunately, The Suicide Squad presents the perfect opportunity for fans to express themselves—and their pets—in the silliest ways. The film’s tone, after all, does seem to honor and even encourage that silliness. They made Starro a car-stomping kaiju, for crying out loud. Not sure how much wilder it can get from there. So it is perfect.
If you are sitting there wondering who Polka-Dot Man is and why this snake is so funny, here is a quick primer: Created by Sheldon Moldoff and Charles Paris, Polka-Dot Man (real name Abner Krill) debuted as a minor supervillain, usually one who found himself soundly thwarted by Batman and Robin. He never amounted to as much as bigger, more sinister villains such as Joker, Riddler, Bane, or any of those other heavy-hitters who frequently show up to cause problems for the Bat-family.
Regardless of any of that, though, James Gunn appears to have honed in on what makes the character appealing—and amusing—and exaggerated it in a way only he can. Even better is the casting: David Dastmalchian will be portraying Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad, which is honestly just perfect. The character made his first appearance in Detective Comics #300. As for why it is funny…it’s a snake cosplaying as a comic book character and looking thoroughly displeased. Like, who does that? Also, why haven’t more people done that? Not sure what more you want, but that’s hysterical.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (and a fandom dedicated to snake cosplay) may prove to be a bright spot in DC’s somewhat grim future. And that is so needed, especially with DC and Warner Bros. executive seeming to have no clue where to take these characters and concepts next. With so much up in the air and so many rumors swirling at any given point, it often seems impossible to sort through what is actually happening with the DC Extended Universe and what is just wishful thinking on the fans’ part. We may still be more confused than ever even after the film releases, but at least we will have a fun movie that doesn’t take itself so seriously for no reason. Lookin’ at you, Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
You can catch Polka-Dot man in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad when it hits theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on August 6. Until then, continue to enjoy the snake cosplaying as a Suicide Squad character. I know I will.
