Captain America is now Anthony Mackie, and fans have been wondering just what that could mean for the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know that Captain America 4 is already in development, but would we have to wait for that movie to see the new Cap in action on the big screen? It turns out that the powers-that-be at Marvel Studios are actually planning to have the character show up in another feature film before he headlines his own entry in the ongoing film franchise.
Our trusted and proven insider source has passed along information that shows Anthony Mackie will be showing up as Captain America in Black Panther 2 a.k.a. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. We were unable to discern just how prominent the role would be, so this could either mean that Mackie will be playing a full supporting role or could pop up in a cameo capacity. Could this be part of the eventual post-credits teaser that everyone expects from every Marvel Cinematic Universe property? Or is the plan to have Mackie be part of the greater ensemble for the sequel? Again, we can’t confirm the size of his role but we can assure you that he will be featured in the movie.
There is certainly a direct connection to Wakanda for Anthony Mackie’s Captain America. His brand new costume that we saw in the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was made by Wakandans, so he certainly owes them a debt of sorts. Even beyond that, there is no reason Sam Wilson would not be friendly with Wakanda. If there is some issue that would require his assistance, there is no doubt he would offer his help at the drop of a hat. Perhaps that could even bring in Bucky Barnes since he has an even deeper tie to Wakanda due to his time spent rehabilitating there.
It certainly would not hurt to see Anthony Mackie appear as Captain America in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He has made the role his own and it will be great to see him play it in any number of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Plus, with the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, the sequel is going to unavoidably struggle with how best to carry on the story without its lead character. Having Mackie there to shoulder some of that responsibility is not a bad idea. Just how much he would be involved with the entirety of the plot would obviously affect that level of responsibility.
We will simply have to wait and see just how Marvel Studios plans to utilize Anthony Mackie as Captain America in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but it is exciting to know that he will be playing some part in the sequel. He has already crafted his own strong take on the iconic superhero and it is going to be fascinating to watch him continue to build that character over the coming years. Seeing a part of that journey take place in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is yet another reason to be intrigued by that movie.
