Tons of different celebrities and movie actors have hosted the popular sketch show, Saturday Night Live, ever since it began. But the latest guest host on SNL was someone different from the usual array of celebrities we are used to seeing on the show—the ever-controversial business magnate, Elon Musk and his girlfriend, Grimes. While the appearance has been much-hyped, all the multiple skits starring Musk only drive in one point—he is no comedian and especially not cut out to be an actor.
On May 8th, the Tesla CEO made his hosting debut on SNL and though many were excited to catch his appearance, it would be an understatement to say that his surreal skits have left viewers divided. The one that is currently the talk of the town is the ludicrous sketch that saw Elon Musk appear as Wario, complete with a cartoonish Italian accent, and Grimes as Princess Peach. The story is simple: Mario dies in a go-kart accident and Wario is accused of killing him.
The sketch was obviously gesturing to the recent news that Nintendo is allegedly planning to kill Mario. In the sketch, Elon Musk’s Wario goes on trial but his defense attorney (Mikey Day) stirs the blame towards Mario’s brother, Luigi (Kyle Mooney) by exposing that he had been having an affair with his girlfriend, Princess Peach, thus prompting Grimes to utter her sole line- “I a-never touch him under the overalls!” As the chaos rise, Pete Davidson’s Governor Andrew Cuomo drops in and declares that the entire drama was actually an advertisement for the “Italian-American Anti-Defamation League.” Watch the five-minute sketch below.
This Elon Musk sketch was made up of Nintendo characters, even their actual bios from the game, sound effects, and some not-so-hilarious sexts. In fact, it was actually Grimes who managed to impress as she pulled off the exaggerated portrayal of Princess Peach with ease in comparison to Musk’s weirdly hammed-up villain.
While some viewers found Elon Musk to be a better SNL host than the few celebrities who have recently hosted the show, some were so put off by his comedy that they couldn’t watch the entire episode.
His sketches and acting haven’t been the only topic of discussion. When Elon Musk ascended the stage initially, he talked for the first time about having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He went on to claim that he is making history by hosting SNL, as he is the first person with Asperger’s [syndrome] to helm the show and publicly admit it.
However, viewers were quick to point out that Elon Musk’s claims were incorrect as the famous comedian, Dan Aykroyd, who was a part of SNL from 1975-1979 and hosted the show in 2003, also suffered from Asperger’s syndrome and Tourettes. He too has shared his daily struggles of living with the disorder publicly, which indeed nullifies Musk’s claims.
During the episode, Elon Musk also talked about his son’s unusual name and jokingly added that it’s “pronounced cat running across keyboard.” While Musk managed to get a few laugh-out-loud moments during the show, it’s safe to say he is no Alec Baldwin or Steve Martin and we certainly won’t miss him hosting SNL in the future.
