The final trailer for A Quiet Place Part II dropped on Thursday (May 6, 2021), teasing a post-apocalyptic world full of monsters, in which sound is deadly, picking up the story where the first movie left off. Part II centers around surviving members of the Abbot family navigating the dangerous world in which the faintest of sounds might get you killed after the death of the family’s patriarch, Lee (John Krasinski). However, the sequel’s trailer clearly shows Lee entering a pharmacy or running hand-in-hand with his wife Evelyn (Emily Blunt). Did John Krasinski decide to resurrect his character, or is there something else at play here?
Well, the actor/director’s fans will be glad to hear that John Krasinski is back in front of the camera for A Quiet Place Part II, but his character isn’t coming back to life. Instead, the scenes featuring John Krasinski as Lee Abbot are the flashback sequences set before the collapse of civilization seen in the first film. Being the original movie’s actor and director, Krasinski, decided to appear in the sequel because, according to him, the first movie was a tremendous personal experience for the actor-director. He stated that it was a “love letter” to his children and that it’s essential for him to continue the metaphor and bring the story full circle.
The sequel also introduces other complex factors, like the presence of a newborn child in a world in which sound means certain death, and two other characters, portrayed by Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou, who appear as benevolent characters. At least for the time being. John Krasinski was initially hesitant to continue the story when Paramount Pictures approached him to make a sequel. The original film was a commercial and critical success and a true cinematic rarity that broke the box office. The actor-director was concerned that the sequel wouldn’t be able to recapture the essence and success of the first film.
However, A Quiet Place Part II has the potential to become a box office hit much like its predecessor, with current grossing forecasts sitting between $60 and $80 million on the first weekend alone, surpassing the first film’s $27 million. Krasinski had a change of heart three months after the first film’s debut, after coming up with an organic follow-up to the original story – something he believes is crucial in making a good film. Now, all that remains is to wait for a theatrical release on May 28, with a streaming release on Paramount+ 45 days later.
