Cameo appearances most definitely aren’t a novelty for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the studio teases their future releases and mentions the old ones throughout their entire movie universe. With Phase Four currently under development and Spider-Man: No Way Home in production, many speculate possible cameo appearances for the upcoming movie. Actor Andrew Garfield, a web-slinger from The Amazing Spider-Man film franchise, commented on whether he’s returning as Spider-Man, or not.
According to an article by MovieWeb, actor Andrew Garfield denies this appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home and debunks one of the enormous speculations regarding the upcoming film. Some of the biggest rumors surrounding the third Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man film and its plot are the possible appearances of previous web-slingers, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The two are supposedly helping Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man on a multiverse-related adventure, similarly to what we’ve previously seen in the animated Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Despite a ton of evidence suggesting otherwise, Andrew Garfield negated all rumors and speculations regarding his supposed appearance in the next Spider-Man movie. The actor laughed at the idea, stating that any answer he would give won’t spoil anything regarding the future film, except for the fact that he’s not in it. He then explained that even the fandom doesn’t believe his claims and jokingly compared the situation to the game of Mafia or Werewolf. Andrew then doubled down on the denial, stating that he hasn’t received any call from Marvel. The actor did theorize that the studio is testing the waters and doing market research, leading to his inclusion later down the road.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man lead Tom Holland also remained adamant that the previous live-action versions of Peter Parker – Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire – won’t appear in the upcoming movie, despite the film’s introduction of the multiverse. We won’t compare the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the house of lies, but they are home to some powerful movie secrets, so we must consider the possibility that everyone’s keeping the fandom in the dark. In the end, some of the franchise’s previous character iterations are returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man. We already know about Jamie Foxx’s reprisal of Electro and Alfred Molina’s return as Doctor Octopus, which respectively appeared in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
Additionally, Spider-Man: No Way Home will feature Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, as the film ties into the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is a sequel to the 2016’s Doctor Strange. But only the fandom talks about Andrew Garfield’s appearance, while Marvel stays silent. Perhaps too silent? Given the reappearance of several “legacy” characters, could Garfield’s interview statement serve as a cleverly devised misdirection? We’ll have to wait for December to find out.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to release on December 17, 2021, with Tom Holland as Spider-Man, and several other actors making cameo cast members from previous Spider-Man movies. The movie will feature a theatrical release on said date, with streaming releases on Disney+, Hulu, and Disney’s linear television, following its release on Netflix.
