Tom Hiddleston Is Going Back To Work For Marvel
Tom Hiddleston has been Loki almost since the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he's coming back for more soon.
Don’t look now but Tom Hiddleston is one of the longest-tenured actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s not the first name you’d likely think of when trying to guess at who’s been around the most years in the franchise, but Loki has been up to his tricks since nearly the beginning of this whole thing. And he doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, it looks like things are only ramping up for the actor and character. According to The Ronin, it looks like Hiddleston is back on location filming something as Loki. The big question now is what project he’s working on.
The Ronin’s report has it that Tom Hiddleston and the Loki crew have moved their operating to the United Kingdom for the time being and are preparing to get underway filming something. But what could it be? There’s some chance they are just throwing together additional scenes for the upcoming series which will have its first season coming sooner than later. There’s also some chance they are putting together an end-credits sequence for another production that will include the character. These have long been hallmarks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both possibilities are on the table.
A third explanation though could be that Tom Hiddleston and company are already gearing up for the second season of Loki. In this day and age of on-screen comic book properties and the growing world of the MCU itself, it’s always possible to move on to a sequel (so to speak) before the original has hit the screen. This is the world order when it comes to these major franchises. The path is typically set out years in advance and short-term reception to a show or movie isn’t the final factor in whether a certain story will continue well off into the future. In this way, Loki might already be part of a new story arc.
Tom Hiddleston has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Loki since 2011 when he first hit the scene in Thor. He became the primary antagonist for The Avengers shortly after before making his way, somewhat to the right side of things in terms of alignment. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the character, swapping sides and playing everyone against the middle if it helped him in his quest for power. The timeline on that ran out though when Thanos (apparently) killed him in Infinity War.
But these being comic book shows and movies, we know that nothing is ever permanent and there are more Loki stories out there. In this new show, it will explore an alternate timeline that splintered off from the events of Avengers: Endgame in which the group wasn’t able to secure the Tesseract from the trickster god. This story will have him working to reset the original timeline or else face the prospect of being wiped out of existence. For a morally devoid character like Loki, this will likely cause some significant challenges along the way.
So it looks like we are going to be seeing Tom Hiddleston as Loki for some time. Considering his powers, relationship with Thor, alternate timelines, and the actor’s ability to just crush the role there are a lot of incentives to keep the character around. Loki’s first season will have six episodes and will debut this June on Disney+.
