This article is more than 2 years old
Alien: Isolation is one of those rare examples in which a video game successfully captures the essence of the movie it set out to interpret. For many, it brought the same amount of suspension and fear as the 1979 Ridley Scott’s Alien movie, earning the game positive reviews, several awards, and a massive fan following. But never a sequel. That is, until now, because rumors suggest that Alien: Isolation 2 is being developed.
According to Small Screen, a pop culture media outlet, an unidentified source close to Disney disclosed that Alien: Isolation 2, and sequel to the mega-hit Alien: Isolation, is supposedly in the works. The information still isn’t verified or confirmed, but according to the source, Disney is currently scouting for developers to make the game. The game’s original developer and publisher won’t, and possibly can’t, work on the sequel for several reasons, leaving Disney’s hands unbound to find another company to develop the title. According to the same source, Disney is considering several candidates, which means the project hasn’t left its conceptual stage.
News travels fast, and Alien: Isolation 2 fandom took this particular news to heart. The original game was, according to fandom, the best Alien property since the release of the first Alien movie – a masterpiece of genre filmmaking. Creative Assembly, the original game’s developer, managed to recapture the survival horror atmosphere of the original film accurately and imprint the same experience into the game. No, you’re not trying to kill the Xenomorph (the actual Alien); you’re trying to outsmart it and survive.
And while the original game managed to capture the survival horror essence, Sega was ultimately disappointed with the game’s poor sales. After the game gained enough traction and popularity, Creative Assembly considered developing a sequel, Alien: Isolation 2. Still, Sega dropped the franchise to pursue “greener pastures,” most notably, their Warhammer and Total War titles. It was later disclosed that most of the Alien: Isolation’s design team no longer worked at Creative Assembly.
Disney acquired the rights to the franchise during their acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which owns the title. Rumor has it that Disney initially canceled a bunch of video games based on its newly acquired subsidiary’s franchises, which included some Alien-based titles. However, given the slow-paced but massive success of Alien: Isolation, Disney might be looking to cash in its investments by developing Alien: Isolation 2. Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to discern any real details without any official statements and confirmations, so take this information for what it is – just a rumor.
Should nothing come of it, gaming fans of the franchise can still look forward to the upcoming multiplayer third-person shooter Aliens: Fireteam, which releases this summer for consoles and PC. In the meantime, rumor has it that Disney set their eyes on more than just an Alien video game – supposedly, they’re planning to reboot the entire franchise. Will Alien follow the footsteps of Star Wars, with Disney “redecorating” the franchise and pumping out a new movie every other year? What will be of Alien: Isolation 2? We don’t know yet, but we’ll keep you informed.
