It was a rough year for the Academy Awards. Between the outrage over Chadwick Boseman’s Best Actor snub to Harrison Ford’s interesting intro speech, this year’s Oscars brought with them more than a bit of controversy. And the internet has been quick to voice its disappointment in the show. Now, iconic actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has chimed in, and his words are not particularly kind. They weren’t necessarily mean either, but he certainly did not mince words when voicing his thoughts.
During a new interview with Jimmy Kimmel (via MovieWeb), Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that he was less than pleased with this year’s installment of the Academy Awards.
Check out what Arnold Schwarzenegger had to say about the show, shown in the selected quotes below:
“I was asked several times, did I watch the Oscars? I told people, I said, ‘I watched maybe one third of it.’ So, I couldn’t even tell you if I won. Did I win yesterday? The reason I only watched one-third was because it was so boring… I basically just turned it off.”
Well, there you have it, folks. Maybe that is why the Oscars hit an all-time low with its viewership numbers this year. It seems like a majority of the people who tuned in to this year’s Academy Awards share Arnold Schwarzenegger’s feelings about the show. That being said, it will be interesting to see if next year’s ceremony ends up being more of a success. It stinks that so many incredible performances were overshadowed by problems such as this. Last year was a pretty solid year for film, even if the pandemic forced studios to dramatically alter their marketing and release strategies.
This year’s Academy Awards ceremony was certainly an interesting one. It does, however, seem as if every time Oscar season rolls around, there is some kind of upset or controversy. Remember the La La Land/Moonlight fiasco from a few years back? And that’s not even the worst of what has become of an Oscars ceremony. But hey, Arnold Schwarzenegger was right to call this year’s show “boring.”
But what Arnold Schwarzenegger-and others-have not really mentioned is that some enormously good things have come from the awards show, too. Last year, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite shattered records and made history, marking a huge step forward for representation in mainstream media. Of course, we still have a long way to go before things are better, but it was encouraging to see the Academy give its top awards to a project and a filmmaker that very much deserved them. Again, though, we have a ways to go before quality representation is more widespread.
As for what the actor has in store for his fans, there’s an exciting project he partnered with Marvel legend Stan Lee on that is just now seeing the light of day. That’s right, folks! Up next for Arnold Schwarzenegger is a voice role in Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, which Lee created before his death in November 2018. During the interview with Jimmy Kimmel, he even released a clip for those eager to see what he has been up to. It looks like a ton of fun, and Schwarzenegger appears to be having a blast, too.
If you have not seen the show yet but totally want to, fret not! You can catch Arnold Schwarzenegger in Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, which is now streaming exclusively on the Kartoon Channel.
