Elizabeth Banks Is Giving A Classic Cartoon An Adult-Oriented Sequel

Elizabeth Banks is a comedic actress through and through. Whether it’s Wet, Hot American Summer, Pitch Perfect, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, or playing Larry David’s crazy girlfriend (as herself) in Curb Your Enthusiasm, she’s consistently able to bring the comedy on screen. And it looks like she’s getting involved with another potentially funny reboot soon. Deadline is reporting that Banks is involved with a remake of The Flintstones which will take an adult spin on the Bedrock family.
This new spin on The Flintstones will be called Bedrock and is in development from Fox. It’s going to be an animated series but will be geared to an adult audience, playing on certain themes not happening in the original cartoon and likely drawing its laughs from possibly making fun of the iconic cartoon series. Elizabeth Banks is going to voice Pebbles Flintstone on the show.
The upcoming version of The Flintstones will act as a sequel to the original show. It’s set to pick up two decades after the events of the cartoon. Fred is getting up there in years and is considering retirement. Meanwhile, the Elizabeth Banks version of Pebbles is a Stone-Age millennial who is just entering the workforce on her own. It’s unlikely to be at Fred’s old stomping grounds of Slate Rock and Gravel Company but we could see something similar for the character. According to the show notes, it’s a time of transition from Stone to Bronze and all of the societal pitfalls that come with the changes.
No other casting decisions have been made for this updated sequel for The Flintstones but we should see Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, and Bam-Bam sooner than later. Elizabeth Banks is not only on to voice Pebbles but also has a producer role on the show as well. There’s also no clear timeline on when the show will release, but apparently, it’s been in development for a number of years now.
There’s no word on whether Elizabeth Banks will direct any of these episodes for The Flintstones, but that’s definitely in her wheelhouse as well. In the last few years, she’s been behind the camera on the Charlie’s Angels reboot as well as Pitch Perfect 2. She also has the film The Greater Good in the post-production timeline as well. And in terms of screentime, she has a couple of films set to come out this year with both Signal Hill and Call Jane also in the works. In the latter film, she’ll team up with Rooney Mara and Sigourney Weaver for what looks like a heavier production.
The Flintstones first hit the air all the way back in 1960 with a prime-time animated cartoon that broke ground in that sense. It was the first animated show to enter that evening time slot and ended up being the most financially lucrative cartoon for decades until The Simpsons overtook it in the 1990s. It’s been quite a run for this group from Bedrock. Here’s to hoping Elizabeth Banks and company can take a page right out of history again.
