Fast Franchise

If you thought that the Fast and the Furious franchise could not get any more insane, think again. Its next installment, the belated Fast & Furious 9, is yet another “Hold my beer” statement the franchise makes every time it releases a new installment. The one-upping is certainly entertaining, and it looks like Fast 9 is going to continue the tradition of trying to top its predecessors with lots of explosions and no shame at all. If that has you pumped, then you will love this: The new trailer is here, and it has…flying cars? Yep, you read that correctly.

The Fast & Furious 9 trailer looks just as wild and implausible as you would expect, and we are absolutely here for it. It will be interesting to see just how wild things get. So far, each successive installment in the franchise has been able to go bigger and better than what came before, and this new movie does not seem to want to deviate from that. Maybe Vin Diesel will skyscraper-hop in a sports car like he has in the past? We will see! It is unlikely that the filmmakers would copy a stunt from a previous film, but anything is possible in these films. But if he made cars “fly” then, it will be awesome to witness him piloting a car that is, you know, actually built for air travel.

Honestly, though, Fast & Furious 9 introducing flying vehicles is not that big of a leap, especially for a franchise known for outrageous stunts and death-defying car tricks. In fact, this really would not be the craziest thing the franchise has ever done. Far from it. Remember when Jason Statham got crushed by a parking garage in Fast and the Furious 7, only to be seen walking to his prison cell in the very next scene? Or when Paul Walker leaped off a train as it was plummeting into a canyon? Those are just a few examples of the lengths the franchise is willing to go to avoid making sense. Yes, they are extensive. And yes, they are everything they are trying to be.

The only not-so-great aspect of Fast & Furious 9 is its omission of Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs. The guy has quickly become a franchise highlight, and not including him here feels wrong. But hey, that just means we get to see him again in that Hobbs and Shaw sequel that’s currently in the works.

Say what you will about the Fast & Furious movies, but you have got to admit one thing: They are unabashedly themselves, and that is a big draw for a lot of people. These movies know what they are and what they are about, and they don’t strive to be anything else. Not surprisingly, Fast and the Furious 9 looks to be more of the same. And I mean that in the very best way.

Fast & Furious 9 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 25, 2021. Will you be watching?
