Ever since Marvel creative architect Kevin Feige revealed that Ryan Reynolds would be officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Deadpool, the internet has been buzzing about how, where, and when the Merc with a Mouth will debut in the studio’s big-screen continuity. It stands to reason that he would show up in Deadpool 3, but Marvel could absolutely surprise us with a cameo before that. We still do not know the answer to that question, but thanks to a new rumor, we suspect that he won’t be showing up with a fan-favorite Marvel actress.

Gossip writer Daniel Richtman brings word that Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson are not on great terms and that the folks at Marvel are doing all they can to keep their characters from meeting or interacting at all in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is disappointing. If this is true, though, you can count out the possibility of Black Widow and Deadpool teaming up for some globe-trotting, butt-kicking adventure. This may just be a rumor at this point, but Richtman’s scoops have proven accurate in the past, so it’s possible that there’s some truth to this.

Scarlett Johansson is set to reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in Black Widow (now slated for a simultaneous release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access), but it is currently unclear how or even if she will show up in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Her character died during the events of Avengers: Endgame, meaning that her solo film would need to center around a post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War mission. That mission was unlikely to include Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool before, but now that possibility is even less likely. Either way, we probably will not be seeing much more of her in the cinematic continuity anyway.

We do not know when Ryan Reynolds will debut as Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we can say with some confidence that he won’t be showing up to fight alongside Black Widow anytime soon-or at all. That’s honestly a shame because both characters together would be a blast to watch on screen. Reynolds is hilarious, and Scarlett Johansson has her fair share of funny quips, too. Put them together and watch them both grow more irritated and agitated. To be fair, it seems like that is already happening between the two outside of their Marvel roles, so maybe we should not open that can of worms.

Ryan Reynolds portrayed Wade Wilson/Deadpool in Deadpool and Deadpool 2, as well as in the abysmal X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He was a showstopper in two of those three films, and his immensely likable performance as the head-lopping mercenary won over countless comic fans. It also made new fans out of millions of viewers. When he finally does show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can bet that it will be one heck of an entrance. The character demands nothing less.

You can catch Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow when it premieres-finally!- in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9. Just don’t expect a Ryan Reynolds cameo.
