Shang-Chi is about to get a live-action adaptation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing a character many probably aren’t all that aware of in the greater comic book landscape. It’s set to be something of a different movie than most of the other works we’ve seen in this universe and should be a very cool addition to this world. Now we have one of our first chances to see what the character and his primary enemy are going to look like. Geekosity is giving us a glimpse thanks to a reported leak from some toy product designs for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
This new look at the Shang-Chi character isn’t of the main character in a live-action form but rather on the back of a toy box that is apparently heading into production. You can see from the pictures that this is going to be an understated approach and won’t have some of the same superhero hallmarks of other characters we see in the universe. Check out some of the images that were leaked as part of the toy development around the movie.
The dress for Shang-Chi looks like it is going to take a traditional approach and we could be seeing more of a dialed back film than others we’ve seen in this space before. There’s no heavy spandex or unitards at play here but rather a simple outfit for a guy who can kick a lot of ass in the Kung Fu department.
In addition to the look and feel of this character which has clear lines and a distinct red and black color scheme, there’s also apparently a staff that comes with the toy as an accessory. We should see a lot of that at play in the fighting scenes. This is shaping up to be a true martial arts movie, somewhat unlike anything else we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. There’s been plenty of fighting mind you, just not as much centered around this specific genre.
There’s even a description of the character on the box which gives some clues to the movie’s plot. Shang-Chi has been trained by the mysterious Ten Rings Organization and has to confront his father and a darker and seedier past. This is likely where the antagonist, The Mandarin comes in. We got a look at this character as well.
The Mandarin, played by Tony Leung just also happens to be, you guessed it, the father of Shang-Chi. So we are setting up for a father-son showdown that could feature some heavy-duty fighting.
In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the titular character will be played by Simu Liu. The Canadian actor has had a number of smaller parts in films and movies over the years but did have a successful turn in the Canadian series Blood and Water. He’s also known for his extensive stunt work and is geared perfectly for this new role which could vault him into superstardom.
We’ve gotten a glimpse of Shang-Chi on the back of a toy box, and it won’t be long until we actually see the character up on the screen. Originally, the film was set to release in February of this year. But Covid-19 delays pushed it back and now Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set for a September 3. 2021 release.
