At this point, one can forgive Henry Cavill if he’s on the lookout for a new franchise to take over. After all, he might be on his way out of one major group of films and stories. So there could likely be an appetite to make sure the future is set by signing on to another one in an expanding universe. That might be the case for the actor who could be seeing an expansion of his role as Sherlock Holmes on Netflix. Though he’s already been in the part as more a side character, this latest rumor could have him getting a much more expanded role in the upcoming sequel Enola Holmes 2.
According to We Got This Covered, Henry Cavill would be taking his role of Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes 2 and working it into an expanded role within the current franchise. The follow-up film hasn’t been yet confirmed officially but there’s little doubt it’s going to happen considering the success of the first one and the star-studded talent involved. There’s no doubt that Netflix would be bringing back another movie around the central character and her family. It stands to reason they are just ironing out the details including how to best work Cavill’s Holmes into a bigger part.
The original film, Enola Holmes starred Millie Bobby Brown in the titular role as Sherlock’s younger teen sister. She was the central figure in the story though Henry Cavill did feature in the plot. It was obvious that Enola has skills of her own and the story was meant to convey that others in the family have their own set of attributes that make her a detective in her own right. But there’s no reason a new movie with the group couldn’t see these two teaming up even more in another story, featuring Cavill’s character and potentially expanding the franchise even further going forward.
An expanded role for Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes would make a lot of sense if this were to turn more into a franchise. Considering the actor’s star power along with the likely need to keep the character central to the story, it would be of utmost importance to get him in a bigger role if they moved forward.
As for Henry Cavill in his current franchises, the future isn’t abundantly clear on all fronts. For starters, there’s the will-they-won’t-they nature of his role going forward as Superman in the DC Extended Universe. Coming off of Zack Snyder’s Justice League the future is a little hazy. On the one hand, that film may have breathed a little life into the greater universe, paving a way for Cavill to return as Superman. But we also know the character is due for a reset with JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates taking over the next film.
But there’s also Henry Cavill in Netflix’s The Witcher which is just wrapping up filming on Season 2. The streaming platform has a hit on its hands there and could be looking to lock up Cavill long term with other projects. That’s where this Sherlock Holmes news makes a little more sense and could end up making him one of the staples on the streaming platform moving forward.
