JJ Abrams Is The New Mastermind Of The DC Universe
Is JJ Abrams the right creator to lead DC superheroes into the future?
This article is more than 2 years old
Say what you will about JJ Abrams, but he is generally a pretty solid filmmaker. Sure, he directed the abysmal Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, but he also made the first Star Trek reboot and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, both of which were great movies. Now, the popular director is said to be taking over a big-name superhero movie universe, and honestly, we are here for it.
Geekosity brings word that JJ Abrams is becoming the Kevin Feige of the DC Universe. More specifically, DC wants him to reboot and direct an upcoming Justice League movie. And yes, that does indeed mean that if this turns out to be true, then the SnyderVerse will indeed be no more. What this will connect to, though, is Abrams’s upcoming Superman movie. Honestly, if that means we get to see Abrams flex his creative muscles and pump out an incredible DC ensemble movie, then we should all welcome this possibility with open arms.
This news for JJ Abrams spins out of our previous report that said Robert Pattinson would be leading a multiverse Justice League. While that was also a rumor, it is nice to see that these reports are beginning to connect in some way. But there’s a major conflict here that threatens to corrode the connective tissue: The Rock is a huge proponent of the SnyderVerse, and his clout in Hollywood will undoubtedly cause more pushback from Warner Bros.’s parent company, AT&T. The folks at AT&T see the SnyderVerse as an avenue ripe with potential, but DC head Walter Hamada and his fellow executives at Warner Bros. are eager to distance their vision from Zack Snyder’s, probably to move toward what JJ Abrams can do.
If Geekosity’s report ends up being true, the concept that JJ Abrams and DC would be working from originated in Grant Morrison and Ivan Reis’s The Multiversity comic series. Just how much DC and Warner Bros. will end up taking from the source material remains to be seen, but with Abrams at the helm, it has a good chance of being something special. Fingers crossed.
JJ Abrams made waves in the industry with films such as the first two installments in the Star Trek reboot franchise, Super 8, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and others. He is one of the most talked-about creators in Hollywood, even if his record isn’t exactly perfect, and big studios frequently seek him out for help with their most lucrative franchises.
If JJ Abrams does end up directing a multiversal Justice League team-up movie, it will be interesting to see how much he deviates from Snyder’s proposed vision. Sure, people loved the Snyder Cut of Justice League. But that film clocks in at a staggering four-hours, and many viewers could not sacrifice an entire afternoon just to watch a passable superhero movie.
Hopefully, JJ Abrams does not take a page from Snyder’s book and make this new Justice League film longer than two-and-a-half hours. He is a phenomenal filmmaker, but even he would have considerable trouble keeping audiences entertained for four hours.
