Star Trek made some major waves on Tuesday using First Contact Day to drop all kinds of cool stuff for the ever-expanding franchise in the form of trailers, character returns, and casting decisions. There was a flurry of exciting new looks and teaser trailers that all point to a franchise steadily in growth mode. One of those was the trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 which brings more stories to this animated universe.
It’s a different look than what we’ve seen before from the franchise and Lower Decks is coming off a successful first run in this animated world. Now we can see they are bringing even more ridiculous stories for another time around including a heavy dose of Captain Riker at the end. Check out the Lower Decks Season 2 trailer:
As you can see from this Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 there is just nearly unlimited amounts of anarchy going down on the ship with the good Captain Riker only adding to the madness. From massive space gorillas to rainbow blasters, evil Medusa-like snake creatures, martial arts fighting, and Boimler “having the time of his life” this whole thing looks like a manic and frenetic rollercoaster through space. And it’s punctuated at the end with Riker screaming something nonsensical and yet still vulgar to cap it all off. If you thought the first season took the franchise in a totally new direction, the second season looks like it leans into the, well, adult themes even more.
Captain Will Riker has appeared all over the Star Trek universe, getting his start in The Next Generation and reprising the role through cameos in other series as well. He wasn’t a big part of the first season of Lower Decks, making an appearance in the finale “No Small Parts”. But he’ll be back for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 commanding the ship in his own style and definitely cutting something of a different attitude for this version of the character. While he might be trending a little different in animated form, original actor Jonathan Frakes is still handling the voice role for the character, lending at least a little stability even if the dude has a completely different style here.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 bringing back Riker is just part of the franchise continuing to develop new programs while also nodding to, and interweaving older characters into the mix. It was announced that Kate Mulgrew would be voicing the character of Captain Janeway on the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy as well.
As I said, it was a major day of announcements, teasers, and trailers for the Star Trek universe on Paramount+ with Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 getting in on the action as well. It follows a first season for the animated franchise which gave a new look at a Starfleet ship. Mainly, we got to meet the crew that goes a bit unheralded throughout the rest of the franchise, those working below the deck. Though it was animated, the show is geared more toward an older crowd, adults who also are looking for a bit more humor and off-color jokes within the framework of the beloved franchise. In this way, it really worked. The next season will debut on the streaming platform on August 12, 2021.
