Ryan Reynolds Won’t Work With A Specific MCU Actor?

Celebrity marriages can be hard to keep track of. Many celebrities marry and divorce rather quickly. Some have a lot of intrigue, even if they don’t last too long. Others are long love stories that draw a great deal of attention for how sweet they are. Today, Ryan Reynolds is married to Blake Lively. They have frequently publicly gushed over each other since they first wed in 2012. One year prior, he was involved in a three-year marriage to Scarlett Johansson. Today, she plays Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Ryan Reynolds is now officially part of the MCU as Deadpool, it makes sense that the pair may eventually be seen on screen together.
However, according to insider Daniel Richtman, Ryan Reynolds has said that will never happen. Or at least that the actor doesn’t want it to. Richtman told his Patreon page that Reynolds doesn’t want to work with Scarlett Johansson in the MCU because they were previously married.
This is slightly surprising for a few reasons. For one thing, the two have been divorced for nearly a decade at this point. While it’s common for divorced couples to hold grudges, they were young, married for three years, and have had time to move on. For another thing, they are both currently married. Scarlett Johansson is with Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost and Ryan Reynolds is married to Blake Lively. Back in 2019, Reynolds was on SNL with Jost. Some of his best skits were during the news segment with Jost. Reportedly, the pair got along just fine. While working directly with her partner at the time is different than working with her, if he wanted to avoid her it would seem like he just wouldn’t have done Saturday Night Live.
In 2019, Scarlett Johansson spoke to Vanity Fair and referenced her previous marriage. She said that her experience as a divorcee helped inform her performance in the movie Marriage Story. She also said that she was young when she married at twenty-three years old and that she had romanticized the idea of marriage. That she hadn’t fully understood what she was getting into at the time she wed Ryan Reynolds. While her comments were focused on herself, not her ex, she hasn’t said anything that sounds like the pair hold any ill-will toward each other. Of course, it’s hard to know how a celebrity couple truly feel about each other, especially once they’ve split. Being bitter toward your ex is never a good look, especially when they are as well respected as Scarlett Johansson is.
Will it be difficult for Deadpool to avoid Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It hardly seems like Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, is going to design the story world around the pair’s desire to avoid each other. If Black Widow and Deadpool are meant to meet, the actors will likely need to get over it, even if Ryan Reynolds would rather avoid her. That being said, it doesn’t sound like there is much room for immediate concern. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow movie is coming out this summer. Ryan Reynolds is working on making Deadpool 3 happen, but filming won’t start for a while yet. There are many characters in the MCU. If they ever are in a scene together, it will likely be brief, and Ryan Reynolds will have a mask on the whole time. They’ll probably do just fine.
