Star Wars fans have been feverishly theorizing ever since Disney+ and Lucasfilms shared all their major plans about the franchise. One of the biggest announcements was the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that is set to bring back Ewan McGregor as the titular character. Soon all our dreams came true when it was discovered that Hayden Christensen will also be reprising his old role i.e., of Anakin Skywalker a.k.a. Darth Vader. And now, Disney+ has revealed its full cast list for the limited series as well as the announcement that the series will commence shooting from April this year. Can it be more thrilling?
Get a look at who will be joining Ewan McGregor in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series:
The cast list for Obi-Wan Kenobi begins with names we already know: Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. It goes on to reveal the major talent pool the makers of the series have collected, including names like The Eternals and The Big Sick star Kumail Nanjiani, Godzilla: King of the Monsters‘ O’Shea Jackson Jr., and many others. But the biggest “Whoa!” moment from the list is of course the revelation that the amazing Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse are also returning to the Star Wars universe. They had played younger versions of Luke Skywalker’s Uncle Owen Lars and Aunt Beru in the prequel trilogy films, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
But these are not the only exciting additions! We also have the likes of Game of Thrones star Indira Varma (who had been previously rumoured to have joined the series), The Queen’s Gambit’s Moses Ingram, Fast and Furious star Sung Kang, Reckoning‘s Simone Kessell, Homeland star Rupert Friend, as well as Uncut Gems’ co-director, Benny Safdie.
While the cast reveal is more than welcome, we are still in the dark when it comes to knowing what characters these actors will be portraying in the show. Of course, we know what parts Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will be playing. Ewan McGregor is reprising his role of Obi-Wan, the Jedi master, whose story will begin at the time when years have passed since his anticlimactic battle with his former padawan, Anakin Skywalker. Then we have, Christensen returning as the Jedi who was corrupted by the Dark Side and became Darth Vader. As for the rest of the roster of actors announced, we can only guess and theorize about who is going to play who in the Obi-Wan series.
Not much has been revealed about the plot of the series either. All we know is that the story of Obi-Wan will begin approximately ten years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where we saw Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the dark side. Deborah Chow, the director of two The Mandalorian episodes- Season 1’s “The Sin” and “The Reckoning”- will be directing Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor along with Kathleen Kennedy, writer Joby Harold, Michelle Rejwan, and Deborah Chow are on board as executive producers.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the many projects that have been announced in the wake of The Mandalorian’s success. There is also an Ahsoka Tano series in the pipeline along with the recently announced The Book of Boba Fett, Rangers of the New Republic, and many other shows that are set to exclusively stream on Disney+.
