Mike Myers’ Best Austin Powers Character Is Getting A Spinoff?

For years, Mike Myers has wanted to bring back Austin Powers to fans for a fourth movie but so far has not had much luck in doing so. During that span there have been hints but nothing ever materialized. Now though, it appears that Myers may have found his way back into the franchise, not by making an Austin Powers movie, but instead making one that focused on his evil counterpart, Dr. Evil.
According to insider Daniel Richtman on his Patreon page, an “Austin Powers spinoff Dr. Evil movie is in development.” Richtman doesn’t offer any more detail concerning this possible movie, but the idea of a Dr. Evil movie is not a new one.
Back in 2018, Mike Myers was making the rounds promoting his new movie at the time, The Terminal, when he spoke to Entertainment Tonight on the possibility of a fourth Austin Powers movie. “I would love to do a movie from Dr. Evil’s perspective. So it would be Dr. Evil 1, Austin Powers 4, is how I would roll. Start the campaign, please. Thank you,” he said to ET. Was Myers tongue-in-cheek at the time? Apparently not.
Mike Myers’ shagadelic franchise, which included Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Austin Powers in Goldmember, introduced a litany of memorable characters – number one on that list being Dr. Evil. Those three movies in a five-year timespan were box office gold for New Line Cinema, bringing in over $676 million for the combined three movies.
Box office aside, the real question is could Mike Myers even get away with an Austin Powers movie in today’s climate? When Myers first conceived Austin Powers, life was much simpler. Today, if something offends even one person, the social media cancel wagon is sent out in full force ready to cart any and all involved off to Cancelville. It’s easy to imagine Austin Powers and his sexually suggestive, white male persona back in the late ‘90s, but there is no way that would fly today. What about Fat Bastard and the umpteen fat jokes that surround him? While the Austin Powers franchise remains popular, it would be hard to see films such as that get made in today’s sociopolitical climate.
But that doesn’t mean the Mike Myers spinoff won’t happen. Jay Roach, who directed all three Austin Powers movies is another who would love to see a fourth movie. “We talk about it once a month, but until we know what it specifically wants to be,” the director told Deadline. “I don’t disagree that there is a classic battle in the Austin films, that of sort of love versus fear and paranoia, and color versus colorlessness, and music versus fear. Dr. Evil, there are some aspects of the way the world works right now that seem very Dr. Evil-y to me. I’ll just put it that way. But no, we don’t have a specific plan for anything right now.”
Seth Green, who plays Dr. Evil’s son Scott, even chimed in on the possibility of a fourth movie and how willing he’d be to returning to the secret underground lair. “My position is the same: I love those movies and it’s one of the most special and awesome things I’ve ever gotten to be a part of,” Green said to Observer. “But the creation of new stuff rests solely on Mike Myers’ interest or willingness to make something and I don’t know that that’s something he wants to do. With that said, if there was an idea, I would go back for it. It was so much fun just to hang out with that gang. I think any of us would do it.” If you recall, the end of Goldmember actually did set up Scott Evil as the possible main villain moving forward.
Sadly, we know if Mike Myers does make a Dr. Evil spinoff, the one character who will not be making an appearance would be Mini-Me, who was played by the late Verne Troyer. Troyer, whose Mini-Me was introduced in the second Austin Powers movie, tragically took his own life by alcohol poisoning in 2018.
It’s been nearly 20 years since the last Austin Powers film. It has not been 20 years since we’ve seen Dr. Evil though. Mike Myers brought the Evil one back in 2014 during a hilarious cold open on Saturday Night Live.
Mike Myers then brought back Dr. Evil twice in 2018, both times on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
So, who’s down for another Austin Powers movie with Mike Myers? What if the fourth movie focused more on Dr. Evil, would that make a difference, or has too much time passed to make this happen? Hollywood seems to be a nostalgic bunch, especially if there is the possibility of seeing “sharks with frickin laser beams attached to their heads.”
