Jennifer Lawrence is a highly accomplished actress and a star in her own right. From lunatic arthouse fare like Darren Aronofsky’s mother! or the blockbuster appeal of the X-Men franchise, she has always maintained a dependable quality to her acting and continues to be one of the most in-demand actresses of her generation. But, for a number of fans, she will forever be Katniss Everdeen from the landmark sci-fi series The Hunger Games. Many have assumed that there would never be a return to the world of Panem since there were no more books in the franchise to adapt. However, it sounds like the powers-that-be are concocting a way to bring Jennifer Lawrence back as the heroine that made her a household name.
According to our trusted inside source – the same one that has provided Giant Freakin Robot with multiple confirmed exclusive scoops that have included the reveal that Bruce Wayne’s parents will be evil in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, Bruce Campbell will appear for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and that Monica Rambeau will be a main character in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion – Jennifer Lawrence is being eyed for a new Hunger Games movie. Lionsgate, the studio that produced the original movies, is reportedly at the very earliest stages of discussion about how to bring the character back for a feature film. It is unclear if author Suzanne Collins is involved with this project or not.
You can bet that if Lionsgate wants to revive The Hunger Games, they are going to do their best to incorporate an idea that will feature Jennifer Lawrence in a prominent role. Last we heard, Lionsgate was in the process of making a film adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel novel that released in 2020. This would likely not be the project that would feature Katniss Everdeen since she would not be born yet in the timeline of the story, but it could be possible that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes could set up a future story that featured Katniss. At the very least, a teasery appearance from Jennifer Lawrence at the end would signal the start of something new.
But we have to believe that promising the audience a Katniss return means they will want it in total. And exactly what story they will want to tell with Jennifer Lawrence in a lead role would be interesting to see. How much longer would it be set after the events of the final film? What would the major conflict be now that the establishment seems to have been toppled? There are plenty of intriguing avenues to pursue and certainly ones that fans would jump at the chance to see on the big screen. However, it will be worth keeping an eye on when it comes to Suzanne Collins’ involvement. If she isn’t involved, that could offer some conflicting feelings for fans.
