Showbiz and politics share an uncomfortable yet strangely symbiotic relationship. From Ronald Reagan’s presidency to Donald Trump’s attempted dismantling of democracy, the examples of Hollywood celebrities dunking themselves in politics are alarmingly abundant. Now, Matthew McConaughey wants to steer Texas in a more positive direction, and given his star power and philanthropic spirit, he may actually have a shot.
Matthew McConaughey is seriously considering a gubernatorial bid, calling the possibility “a true consideration.” The Oscar-winning actor has been mulling over a leadership position in the Texas government for quite some time, with his recent appearance on the Crime Stoppers of Houston’s podcast, The Balanced Voice, fueling that fire even further.
Matthew McConaughey has been talking about the possibility of running for governor for a year or so now, often during public appearances. Up until now, he has not really seemed too serious about it, mentioning it in passing or when directly questioned about the possibility. Now, after his recent comments on The Balanced Voice, it may be worth mentally—and maybe even emotionally—preparing for a Matthew McConaughey gubernatorial campaign. Wooderson running an entire state? We might see it.
This should not shock anyone, especially considering the fact that we narrowly avoided a Kanye West presidential candidacy last year. 2020 brought with it so many seismic changes that the concept of Matthew McConaughey running for governor is probably one of the least surprising things to happen within the last year. Heck, at this point, it probably is not a terrible idea to expect the wildly unexpected. 2020 may be over, but 2021 is not looking like it is going to be any less ridiculous.
And he does have a community-driven spirit, important for any political run. In February 2016, Variety honored Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman, Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, and others at its Unite4Humanity awards ceremony, where McConaughey was named a recipient of the Creative Conscience award for his various humanitarian efforts. Among his other, more career-specific awards are his Best Actor win for his aforementioned role in Dallas Buyers Club and his Emmy nomination for his performance as Rust Cohle in the first season of True Detective.
Matthew McConaughey has starred in countless films and television shows, with his turns in the first season of HBO’s acclaimed True Detective and the 1993 film Dazed and Confused being among his best, most memorable roles. Of course, it was his performance in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club that ended up winning him an Oscar, but that is a given for anyone even remotely familiar with his filmography. He has also starred in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, The Beach Bum, Free State of Jones, The Dark Tower, and The Gentlemen. Is this resume of a future governor? It kind of worked for Arnold Schwarzenegger in California. Why not in Texas?
In terms of what he has coming up next, Matthew McConaughey is set to lend his voice to Buster Moon in Sing 2, the sequel to the 2016 animated comedy Sing.
Regardless of where you stand on the possibility of Matthew McConaughey as governor, it will be interesting to see if he ends up following through with this. He definitely sounds serious about it, and maybe his involvement in Texas politics will be the breath of fresh air the state has needed for years now. We will just have to wait and see.
