Willem Dafoe left a lasting impression as Norman Osborn a.k.a. Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Fans have been hoping the actor could return to the role one day, especially since he still seems very proud of his work. And with Spider-Man: No Way Home confirmed to be bringing back other antagonists from previous incarnations of the franchise like Electro and Doctor Octopus, there is a groundswell of support to see Willem Dafoe’s original Green Goblin make his way back to the big screen. Well, it just so happens that Giant Freakin Robot has obtained some exclusive information that will make those fans extremely happy.

According to our trusted inside source – the same one that has provided Giant Freakin Robot with multiple confirmed exclusive scoops that have included Bruce Campbell appearing for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Monica Rambeau being a main character in the upcoming Disney+ series Secret Invasion, and Chloe Bennet returning as Quake for a new Marvel series – Willem Dafoe won’t just return as the Green Goblin but is also having a solo movie developed for his version of the character. Exactly what the plot would be for this movie is unclear at this point, but we do think we know why this approach is being done.

Since Sony Pictures is in charge of developing the Spider-Man spinoff movies, it looks like they have decided to focus on certain villains and antiheroes as main characters. In addition to Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, we also have Jared Leto in Morbius, Tom Hardy in Venom and the upcoming sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and there have been reports of Sony also putting a Kraven the Hunter movie together. Not to mention the inclusion of characters like Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Michael Mando’s Scorpion. Add those all together and you would have enough characters to craft a Sinister Six movie. That certainly seems to be the gameplan for Sony. They want to make the Avengers of villain movies.

And having Willem Dafoe return as Green Goblin would certainly get audiences invested in the concept. It looks like Sony might be establishing and reestablishing certain villains to give them lots of options for the Sinister Six movie. And they definitely had plans to make Sinister Six years ago. There is no reason they would have abandoned that if they think it is still the best use of the Spider-Man characters they retain the solo rights to. and after the immense financial success of DC’s Joker, Sony has to believe that audiences want to see movies about villains. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t directly provide that, that’s certainly a unique angle Sony could take advantage of.

What will the Willem Dafoe Green Goblin be like? We will have to wait and see since this is almost assuredly a project that will rely on the success of Sony’s other Spider-Man spinoff movies. But, it would be an absolute treat to see Dafoe back on his Goblin Glider for at least one more time. And getting an entire movie centered around him? Sign us up.
