Godzilla vs. Kong is primed to have two of the movie world’s biggest monsters finally clash in what could be a battle for the planet as a whole. That’s what happens when two ancient and nearly indestructible beasts are on a collision course and clearly have more than a little animosity towards each other. But because this is the Monsterverse, we couldn’t just assume that the two titular beasts would be the only ones to show up on the screen. And from some leaked footage, it looks like another monster is going to join the fray. We have our first look at Mechagodzilla in the next movie.
The photo of Mechagodzilla comes from a scene in Godzilla vs. Kong and definitely dials up the intrigue around what happens in this next movie. Who’s side is he on? Was he created by Monarch in some way to combat the world-destroying threat of Godzilla? It’s pretty clear from the picture that Mechagodzilla has some of the hallmarks of the original character with a metal, robot-like exterior. The monster has differing origins in previous movies, sometimes an alien presence and later manmade to fight Godzilla. It looks very much like we get the latter in this movie.
There had been some movie art floating around for Godzilla vs. Kong that gave a little glimpse on how the character of Mechagodzilla was imagined for the film, but this appears to be the first actual on-screen hint at how he’ll enter the fray. It mirrors, in some ways, the *actual* Godzilla look, theoretically specifically designed to combat that threat head-on.
How Monarch, and the rest of the human race, handles the Godzilla vs. Kong fight remains to be seen. From the trailer, it looks like the two inflict maximum damage on each and their immediate vicinities through a number of different fights along the way. The film looks like it will lean into some of the original films with New York City taking the brunt of the damage. But there’s a fight in the ocean that appears to open the movie as well. It stands to reason Mechagodzilla is a third-act addition when the fighting is at a stalemate. Though that’s only a guess based on a the lack of the character in early promotional material.
Godzilla vs. Kong will be the fourth film in the Legendary Monsterverse franchise following Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The end-credits scene in Skull Island hinted at this clash in the timeline, suggesting these two have been at odds before. Now we will get something of the payoff. It will also look to rebound from the disappointing third movie which barely doubled its nearly-$200 million budget at the box office and scored only 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. This next flick is likely pivotal in the future of the franchise.
Godzilla vs. Kong is set to release later this month overseas on March 24th and a week later on March 31st in the United States. The movie was originally slated to hit theaters in November 2020 but pandemic-related closings pushed back the timing a few months. We are now on the eve of this epic clash, with another robotic monster entering the fight as well.
