Tom Holland is already the star of the Spider-Man franchise, and apparently, he’s up for more films even once his contract is up. In addition to this, Holland might be starting an entirely new franchise, as the star of the upcoming Uncharted film. But now, a new rumor suggests that Holland could also be joining the Jumanji franchise.
We Got This Covered is reporting that Tom Holland is interested in joining the Jumanji franchise, and Dwayne Johnson has already said that he’d like to work with Holland on a project. With Johnson also hoping to continue the Jumanji franchise for the foreseeable future, Holland would be a great way to keep growing this world for years to come.
Johnson’s reboot of the Jumanji franchise, 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a massive hit for Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film earned $962 million worldwide, which led to Sony fast-tracking a sequel, with 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level. But considering that Jumanji is one of Sony’s biggest series, and Tom Holland is one of the studio’s biggest stars with Spider-Man and Uncharted, it would make some sense for Sony to unite Holland and Jumanji in the future.
While Jumanji: The Next Level was also a massive hit, making over $800 million, but Sony might be looking to boost this franchise back the first film’s numbers. Jumanji has already proved that this series might be continuously adding new talent, as the sequel also added Awkwafina, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, and Game of Thrones’ Rory McCann into the mix. Johnson has said that McCann’s character implies there is another avatar within this game that will be explored in future installments. Since we already know this is in the works, could Tom Holland be that other player in the real world?
This would be pretty big news for Holland, who is already having a big year. Already in 2021, Holland has appeared in Cherry, from Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and the long-delayed Chaos Walking is finally getting its release this week. In addition to that, Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently in post-production for a December 17, 2021 release, while Uncharted is scheduled for a February 11, 2022 release.
But maybe the bigger question here is does Tom Holland’s existing obligations mean he could take on yet another franchise? Certainly, Sony would find a way to make Holland’s schedule work around future appearances as Spider-Man and possible new installments of Uncharted. Besides, Johnson is also balancing quite a few franchises, including his own Fast & Furious spinoff with Hobbs & Shaw, as well as Jungle Cruise liking leading to other sequels. If Johnson – possibly the busiest man in Hollywood – has enough time for Jumanji, maybe Tom Holland could make the time too.
While it’s unclear when a third Jumanji film will be coming out, director Jake Kasdan has said that the film is in development. The secondJohnson Jumanji film came out only two years after the original, but it looks like that won’t be the case with the third film, especially if this third installment needs to find time for Tom Holland.
