The Future Of The Mandalorian Is Female?
The Mandalorian has developed a lot of strong female characters already and that is going to be the plan for the studio moving forward.

The Mandalorian has taken the streaming world by storm and helped breathe new life into the Star Wars universe that was already basically at the top of the franchise mountaintop as it was. But the Disney+ show has proven there are still plenty of stories to mine in this world and ways to explore the space well beyond the traditional set of trilogy films. That’s why it’s super cool to hear they are maybe even taking another pivot going forward with the characters. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the future of The Mandalorian could be in its female roles.
Richtman outlines what some of Disney’s plans are with The Mandalorian and how they will strive to have more strong female leads in the future of the show than we saw in the movies. It’s an interesting take considering we are just coming off a Star Wars trilogy that had a female cast in the lead role for all three films. But the sentiment is a good one nonetheless, and something the program has clearly been building on since the beginning.
The Mandalorian, of course, has Pedro Pascal in the lead role as the titular character, but through the first two seasons have worked to make sure strong females are at the center of the action and the story. For starters, there was Gina Carano’s Cara Dune. Whatever you want to say about her eventual ouster from the show, it wasn’t because of anything related to her on-screen role. Quite the opposite really. Dune was a kick-ass addition to the proceedings, a take-no-prisoners fighter who could stand toe-to-toe with anyone else in the universe. There’s no doubt Disney wanted to keep her around but were *forced* to remove her over continued controversy.
And The Mandalorian hasn’t stopped there. They’ve developed Rosario Dawson’s Jedi Ahsoka Tano as a key figure in Season 2 of the show. She’ll get her own spin-off program moving forward (Ahsoka). That is set to hit Disney+ around Christmas of this year with a new storyline about the titular character and her ongoing adventures. It will, for sure, be one of the headlining programs in the franchise around a character who already has a cool story within the Star Wars animated universe.
And other roles could be expanded as well in The Mandalorian universe. There’s Katee Sackhoff’s Bota Katan who appeared in a couple of Season 2 episodes. There have been rumors of a spin-off series for this character in the future for Disney+. She’s a warrior through and through with the science fiction chops to obviously headline a show of her own.
In all, The Mandalorian has worked hard on establishing a wealth of rich characters all around. It hasn’t been strictly a male/female thing, but rather a commitment to making the universe a diverse one that focuses on backstories and motivations. And in that goal, they’ve also cast a slew of female leads who are primed to take over their own programs in the franchise moving forward.
