The stars of the upcoming Spider-Man 3 – Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Jacob Batalon – have all revealed the title for the upcoming Marvel film. The only problem is, each of them has unveiled an entirely different title.
Both Holland and Batalon unveiled their titles around the same time on their Instagram accounts, with Holland saying the film is called Spider-Man: Phone Home, while Batalon has said it is called Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker. Posted two hours later, Zendaya stated that the third Spider-Man will be called Spider-Man: Home Slice. Each fake/real logo also came with a first look photo from the set of the as-yet-unnamed Spider-Man 3, which showed Holland, Batalon, and Zendaya together in what looks to be a basement of some kind.
Holland, Batalon, and Zendaya seem to be poking fun at the sheer amount of Spider-Man 3 rumors that have been spreading over the last few months. Kevin Feige has said that the title isn’t Spider-Man 3, since that film already exists, stating that the working title for right now is Homecoming 3. Recently, Holland also stated that despite all the rumors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are not appearing in this third Spider-Man film, saying “it would be a miracle” if they were.
At the very least, we do know some of the cast of this third Spider-Man, beyond Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon, and Marisa Tomei as May Parker. Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role of Doctor Strange for the film, taking on the mentor role that was previously filled by Tony Stark and Nick Fury in the last two films. But this third Spider-Man will also feature villains from previous iterations of Spider-Man. Alfred Molina will be returning as Doctor Octopus, a role he played in Spider-Man 2, while Jamie Foxx will once more play Electro, which is last played in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
But with Doctor Strange appearing in this third Spider-Man, and villains from other versions of Spider-Man returning to this world, it does seem likely that this new film will deal with the multiverse. This might have actually been originally hinted at in the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, in which Zendaya’s MJ and Holland’s Peter Parker witnessed JK Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson announcing on the news that Parker is Spider-Man. While this originally seemed like a nod to Simmons’ great take on the role, it might have been the first hint of the multiverse opening up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Kevin Feige has said that this new Spider-Man film will be unlike anything we’ve seen in the movies before, considering how Spider-Man: Far From Home concluded. Feige has also previously said that this third movie will be the middle part of an unofficial trilogy that includes WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With so many rumors flying around about this new film, it seems like Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon are joking about how we really have no idea what is coming when Spider-Man 3, or whatever it ends up being called, comes out on December 17, 2021.
