Star Trek: Picard enjoyed a fantastic breakout first season that saw critics gushing over the story and the performance. Fans really lent their support as well with very solid streaming numbers. There was almost no doubt CBS All Access would be champing at the bit to get a second season going and begin developing more stories around the beloved character. It wasn’t a “will they?” issue as much a “can they?” question when it came to filming. That’s because the show has been met with significant delays in production. But that looks behind them now and Star Trek: Picard has officially begun filming Season Two.
The, somewhat official, news around Star Trek: Picard resuming its production came from Michelle Hurd’s Instagram account. She plays Rafaella “Raffi” Musiker on the show and posted a picture of her nametag and a mask. This, along with the message, “Back to work, and it feels so good!!!” makes it pretty clear they’ve got the ball rolling again. Check out Hurd’s post:
Star Trek: Picard has been met with multiple delays as they’ve tried to ramp up production for the second season. Originally, filming was supposed to have started in June. This followed a January 2020 announcement that the show was returning for more episodes but was before the pandemic had gripped the nation. The June date was quickly scrapped because of pandemic-related closings and regulations. In the wake of this, production and filming were pushed all the way back to January of this year.
But Star Trek: Picard missed on that timing too apparently while they were waiting for vaccine measures to go into place for the series’ star Patrick Stewart along with some others. That led to further delays into February as everything was sorted out with protocols and other odds and ends. It looks like all of that is in line now and the show can move on with bringing season two to the screen.
Star Trek: Picard was a major hit for CBS All Access, the network’s streaming service, and was a part of the franchise staging a major comeback in recent years. The continuing story of the titular Captain made for a critical darling with the show’s first season sitting at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. The show also was nominated for multiple Emmy awards around production elements like makeup and editing while Patrick Stewart won a Critic’s Choice Award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/ Fantasy Series.
Season Two of Star Trek: Picard is set to make some major changes for the main character who had a life-changing ending to the first season. It’s a testament to this franchise’s ability to continue creating new stories around old and time-honored characters that make the staying power of Star Trek such a real thing. It’s also why it was such a downer when production kept getting pushed back. That looks like it’s behind us now and a second season could be coming sooner than later. Fans will, no doubt, be pumped considering its popularity and the love for Picard in general.
