Charlize Theron has had one of the more diverse acting careers around. Over the years she’s played all manner of roles, even taking home two Academy Awards for dramatic and groundbreaking work. In that time she’s also piled on the action roles as well, crushing it in bigger box office popcorn productions where she looks right at home. One place she hasn’t spent all that much time on screen though is in the fantasy genre. But that’s set to change soon with Theron taking a role in the upcoming movie The School of Good and Evil alongside Kerry Washington.
The news that Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington will work together in The School of Good and Evil came via director Paul Feig’s Twitter account. He posted yearbook-like side-by-side pictures of the two with their respective roles. Check it out:
The School of Good and Evil is based on the book of the same name. It’s about a school that trains fairytale characters/ people to become either heroes or villains. In this world, kids are basically kidnapped and sent to the titular school to become stories in a book. The film is being adapted by Feig for the screen, possibly as a bigger series.
Charlize Theron will play Lady Lesso, a Dean of Evil of the school. Meanwhile, Washington will play Professor Clarissa Dovey, Dean of Good. The placement of the two actresses in Feig’s tweet does suggest which side of the good/evil spectrum each comes out on.
It’s worth noting that while Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington are two of the bigger names in the movie, neither are in the starring role. The story does revolve around the children who attend the school and their struggles with landing on either the good or bad side of the fairy tale. Those roles will be the main characters, Agatha and Sophia of the Woods Beyond. Sofia Wylie and Sophia Ann Caruso have been cast as the respective characters.
For Charlize Theron, this is one of her first true fantasy roles which is amazing considering the length and breadth of her career so far. Of late, she’s been leaning way into the action roles and is actually set to reprise a couple of cool characters going forward. For starters, Atomic Blond 2 will have her back as the secret agent Lorraine Broughton. She’s also getting back into the role of Cipher when F9, the next Fast & Furious installment finally hits the big screen.
And there’s also the recent news that Charlize Theron is coming back for a sequel to Netflix’s The Old Guard in which she played the ageless and indestructible Andromache of Scythia. These are all awesome roles for the actress and Theron has crushed it across the board in these films.
Filming for The School of Good and Evil is set to get underway soon. It won’t be long before we see Charlize Theron playing out the part of an evil Dean in what could end up being a movie franchise. No doubt she’s made for the part as a domineering and intimidating force on the screen. In that way, some of her action chops should carry over.
