After playing Joan Harris on Mad Men for seven seasons, Christina Hendricks got her own series in 2018 with NBC’s Good Girls. Ahead of the fourth season of Good Girls premiering next month, Netflix has just debuted the third season on Netflix, leading to the series trending on the streaming service.
Good Girls follows Christina Hendricks as Beth Boland, a mother of four who discovers her husband Dean (Matthew Lillard) has been cheating on her. Dean has also taken out several unpaid mortgages and the family is about to lose their house. Beth’s sister Annie (Mae Whitman) works at the Fine & Frugal grocery store and is fighting for custody of her child from her ex-husband. Beth and Annie’s friend Ruby (Retta) is a waitress who needs expensive medication for one of her sick children.
All three women are in dire straits with seemingly no hope. In this desperate time, the three women successfully rob the Fine & Frugal grocery store, but come away with $500,000. Instead of stealing from just the grocery, they find out a crime boss was holding his money at the grocery store, and now he wants his money back. With much of the money already spent, the trio tries to recoup the money for the gang, leading this group on a series of adventures far greater than just the grocery store heist they expected.
In the third season, Beth, Annie, and Ruby are now experienced money launderers no longer working under a crime boss, but are still trying to avoid the law. The third season was originally supposed to be the longest season so far, as NBC renewed the show for 16 episodes, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the run was cut down to 11 episodes. This third season also introduced several new actors, including Orange Is the New Black’s Jackie Cruz, Knocked Up’s Charlyne Yi, and The Wolf of Wall Street’s Ethan Suplee to join in with Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, and Retta.
Good Girls’ has had a fairly solid run over these first three seasons, with the show averaging about 6 million viewers in its first season. In this third season, the show is close to about 1.75 million viewers per week, but this of course doesn’t include streaming numbers, especially since the show is currently doing extremely well on Netflix. The show’s almost Breaking Bad-like premise of three women going down a life of crime is better for binging anyways. But the cast of Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, and Retta keeps this light and fun, even with all the crime and violence.
Good Girls got started with decent early reviews, yet many thought that the cast of Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, Retta, and others was better than the material itself. Ben Travers of Indiewire said, “Good Girls could develop into the show its premise and cast deserve, but it needs to pick a lane and come to terms with its title.” Linda Holmes of NPR said, “Regrettably, the show can’t live up to what the cast promises.”
However, by the third season, Good Girls reviews seemed to have improved. With only six critic reviews of the latest season, Good Girls currently has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the fan response has the new season at a 59%. Yet NBC must like where Good Girls is going, and want to stay in the Christina Hendricks business, as the network renewed Good Girls for a fourth season soon after the conclusion of the third season.
Christina Hendricks was nominated for six Emmys for her portrayal of Joan Holloway on Mad Men. Between Mad Men and Good Girls, Hendricks has appeared in such movies as The Neon Demon, Bad Santa 2, Fist Fight, and The Strangers: Prey at Night. In addition to the third season of Good Girls, Hendricks recently appeared in the film American Woman with Sienna Miller and Aaron Paul, and also voiced the new character Gabby Gabby in Toy Story 4, and voiced Officer Jaffe in 2020’s Scoob!
But with a great cast beyond just Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, and Retta, and an exciting crime story, Good Girls is a great show to binge before the show’s fourth season premieres on March 7, 2021 on NBC.
