Tobey Maguire, for all his career accomplishments and Hollywood ups and downs, will likely forever be best known for his work as Peter Parker in the original Spider-Man movies. Those films helped set the stage for a comic book movie renaissance and began something of a revival for the genre. And now, it very much looks like we are going to Maguire back in the red and blue, web-slinging spandex. With rumors circling for a while, it appears Maguire has already begun filming scenes for Spider-Man 3.
The rumor here comes from Grace Randolph, via her Twitter account. Check out what she has to say about Tobey Maguire getting going in the role for this flick:
According to this rumor, things aren’t confirmed officially but apparently Tobey Maguire is actually on the set and ready to gear up for this latest Spider-Man movie. This follows the recent announcement that the actor had finally officially signed on to reprise his Peter Parker role in Spider-Man 3 though that news wasn’t even necessarily confirmed. The will-he, won’t-he nature of Maguire getting back into things for this movie has been going on for so long I wouldn’t be shocked if we hear something different in just a couple of days. But for now, let’s picture him on-set, alongside Tom Holland slinging that webs like the old days.
Spider-Man 3 has had its fill of rumors and casting decision speculation for the last many months. With the word that the film would involve the multiverse in some way, it’s led to anyone and everyone ever associated with any iterations of the Spider-Man franchise to come up in casting rumors. Of course, at the forefront of those would be Tobey Maguire. His original turn as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man came back in 2002 when he played the titular character to considerable acclaim.
Since then there’s been much change in the Spider-Man universe and the comic book movie world in general. Tobey Maguire went on to reprise the role in Spider-Man 2 and 3. But then, in 2012 the role was rebooted with Andrew Garfield in the lead and the plot reverting back to an origin story. He lasted for two films before Sony ceded over some rights to the character over to Marvel. Both have been rumored to be part of this latest upcoming Spider-Man 3 film though Tom Holland has vehemently denied either taking part.
But considering the amount of previous Spider-Man characters already set to make cameos in this upcoming movie, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield feel like foregone conclusions. Others who have already signed on to reprise their roles include Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx as Electro. That leaves the rumor mill churning on others like Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone as Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy respectively. JK Simmons is reportedly coming back as J. Jonah Jameson as well.
The reason all of this is possible even though Sony controlled the production and distribution of the original Spider-Man universe, is those rights have now fully transferred back to Marvel. The latter owns all of the characters from the original publishing company whereas before certain characters were involved in cross-production deals between the two studios. That’s no longer the case and why we are seeing many characters being worked newly into the mix and others able to reprise roles from previous iterations.
As far as Tobey Maguire is concerned, at this point, I think I need to just see it to believe it. Considering how many rumors have been out there and for how long we’ve been talking about it, just a simple picture of him in the suit on set will suffice. It’s starting to feel simultaneously like it will never happen and it’s just days away. Such is the nature of a major casting announcement like this. It should be worth the wait and will only lend more buzz about a movie that could prove to be one of the biggest and most ambitious projects we’ve seen in some time.
Outside of Spider-Man 3, we should next see Tobey Maguire in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon which is set for a 2022 release.
