Will we be seeing Harrison Ford be de-aged in Indiana Jones 5? At 78-years-old, Ford is coming back for a fifth installment a much older man. Now, Express has heard a very detailed leak about the plot for the upcoming fifth movie, which includes the introduction of the Fountain of Youth.
Express says the story will begin with Indiana Jones happily retired and living a quiet life of marital bliss, but of course, he misses the action of his younger days. So when Jones hears a rumor about the Fountain of Youth, he goes back to his old treasure-seeking ways. Naturally, Jones finds the Fountain of Youth, drinks from it, and Harrison Ford spends most of the movie de-aged, looking as he did in the original movies.
Harrison Ford escaped being de-aged with CGI in Star Wars, unlike Mark Hamill in The Mandalorian. Being de-aged for the majority of the movie is a bold choice. That speaks to a lot of confidence in the CGI technology for the movie if the rumor proves true, especially after The Mandalorian received criticisms for the way Hamill looked in the show’s recent season finale.
Concerns about Harrison Ford’s age have been a theme in the rumors surrounding Indiana Jones 5 so far. Previously, it was said that Chris Pratt had been chosen to replace Ford as Jones in the movies going forward. Harrison Ford rejected that rumor, saying that, “When I’m gone, he’s gone.” Even though Disney will likely find a way to continue Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford, it doesn’t look to be happening any time soon.
The fourth installment in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, came out in 2008. While that was more than a decade ago, even then people were concerned about Harrison Ford’s age. Steven Spielberg shared his fears at the time about Ford returning as Indy after almost two decades. Spielberg was concerned about recapturing the magic of the first three movies. Could he believably play Indy again? Could he recapture that same spirit of Dr. Jones?
Perhaps making a movie involving the Fountain of Youth seems like a way to go ahead and call out the elephant in the room. However, do audiences want to see a de-aged Harrison Ford for most of the movie? Deepfake videos have pulled off impressive footage swaps to show us actors de-aged or playing the roles of other actors. But do we want to see a CGI Harrison Ford for a good hour of a movie? Is the technology so great that it won’t be distracting and creepy? Will we be spending the whole movie looking at his face and just thinking about how strange it looks?
We shouldn’t have long to wait to hear if this rumor about Harrison Ford and the Fountain of Youth will prove true. Frank Marshall said that the script was just in the process of being written in the middle of last year. While Indiana Jones 5 hasn’t begun filming yet, it should soon with its new director, Logan and Ford v. Ferrari‘s James Mangold, as the movie is scheduled to release on July 29, 2022.
