Update 2022: This Giant Freakin Robot exclusive appeared to be confirmed with the word that Emma Stone was making another Easy A. But that has not come to fruition at the time of this writing.

Emma Stone has risen up through the ranks of Hollywood and become one of the most magnetic performers of her age. She has been nominated for an Academy Award three times and won Best Actress for her performance in La La Land. She has headlined arthouse prestige fare like Birdman and The Favourite while also showcasing her comedic talents in comedies like Zombieland and Easy A. That last film catapulted her into pop culture in a way that has continued to stick with her. And it looks like she will be returning to that world for a brand new film.

According to our trusted inside source – the same one that provided Giant Freakin Robot with the confirmed exclusive scoops about Don Cheadle appearing as War Machine in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Josh Brolin returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thanos – Emma Stone will be appearing as the character Olive Penderghast in a spinoff of Easy A. However, this will not be a direct sequel of sorts. She will not be the main character of the story. Instead, the Easy A spinoff will focus on Chip Penderghast, Olive’s younger adopted brother that we met in the first film. Chip will be going to the same high school Olive attended in the first movie and this movie will explore similar themes as the first film. Easy A writer Bert Royal will be back on screenplay duty and will also be in the director’s chair this time around.

From what our source has told us, Emma Stone will have a part to play in the movie, but it is unclear at this time just how substantial her role would be. With Chip now of high school age, Olive has very likely moved on to her own adult life. It is likely that she would not be super present in the main thrust of the story. However, there is not much reason to do an Easy A spinoff if Emma Stone doesn’t make some kind of pivotal appearance. They will definitely want to use her in the marketing campaign to some degree, so it will be good to have her for enough screen time to justify sticking her face on a poster or showcasing a scene with her in the eventual trailer.

Besides Emma Stone, we would hope that the Easy A spinoff would be contingent on getting back Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci back as Rosemary and Dill Penderghast, the wonderful parents from the first film. Their performances and involvement in both Olive and Chip’s lives were big highlights from the first film. It would be a delight to see them both back in those roles. Plus, if the story is going to center around Chip during his high school years, it would be odd if we never saw his parents. Even worse would be if they ended up having to recast the roles. Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci both injected those characters with immense warmth and heart. Having them be absent from the spinoff would be a serious downgrade from the original movie.

It will be interesting to see where Emma Stone’s Olive is at over a decade later. Did she stay with her love interest, Todd, from the first film? Or has she moved on? Fans would love to see where the character is at all these years later. And it could act as a strong bit of meta-reflection for Emma Stone herself. Over the last decade, she has gone from primarily being a comedy actress to one of the most in-demand high-profile thespians working today. She has traversed major film franchises like The Amazing Spider-Man and become an awards darling with movies like The Help. She will be starring in Disney’s villain-centric retelling of One Hundred and One Dalmatians titled Cruella. She has come a very long way since her time in Easy A, and it would be fun to channel some of that through the character of Olive.

There is no word on when this Easy A spinoff is set to go into production. It also does not have an official title yet. Hopefully, we can hear some more news about Emma Stone’s involvement in the project and that can get it off the ground.
